Description
Drove down to the yard this evening to see what was going on. Nothing was moving, but I found BNSF SD9-3 1712 (ex-BNSF 6176, xx-BN 6176, nee-CB&Q 374) sitting by the engine shop in this sad state. I don't know what happened to her, or when. It's recent though as she was fine just a couple days ago.Looks like she got sideswiped pretty good all down the side. I think the point of impact was on the end of the long hood because the steps are missing back there, as is part of the rear walkway and railing. Whatever it was then progressed all the way down the side of the engine to the cab, which is slightly askew, leaning towards the short hood. I don't know what her fate will be. I would like to hope the railroad rebuilds her, but I admit I'm afraid the cost of rebuilding just might be too much for such an old engine.

...Is it just me, or does it seem like RC loco operators at that yard suck? They've wrecked, what, 2 in the past 6 months or so?

Yeah, the last one damaged here was also remote equipped, but I never saw either one remotely controlled. Both always had an engineer on board, in the cab whenever I saw either one operating.

The diesel tank is holed also. It looks like it got swiped by an uneven load of logs..

Yeah, I forgot to point out the hole in the fuel tank. We don't get loads of logs through here, just cut lumber. We do get lots of loads of pipe for natural gas pipelines, though.

That would do it too.. the 12 to 14 foot diameter pipes...

I don't know how much forestry-related freight runs around there, but it looks like the kind of damage that could be inflicted by a saw log that's settled out of the loading gauge and passed the engine on an adjacent track... Heavener had to bad order about one saw-log "SLOGS" car per week because a load-shift sent one long shooting out into space. Once a log shifted so far, the car had to be bad ordered and repaired on the mainline (which meant cutting the log off with a chainsaw) so it wouldn't knock down wayside signal masts.

The predominant forestry-related products on this line are cut lumber on bulkhead flats. We do get a lot gas pipeline pipes shipped through here, though...
