Description Or "Gayelette and Quelala"

Gayelette is a powerful sorceress in Gillikin, the north of Oz. Some say she became the Good Witch of the North, but I believe otherwise.
She was a good ruler, loved by her people, but was for a long time unable to find a mate equal to her beauty and wisdom. Eventually she found a handsome boy named Quelala whom she raised and groomed to be her husband, using her magic to make him strong and good and lovely. They were engaged to be married, and Gayelette spent half her kingdom to create a beautiful Golden Cap as a wedding present for him.

One day just before the wedding, the mischievous Winged Monkeys who lived nearby tossed Quelala into a river as a prank. The princess was very angry and punished the Winged Monkeys by making them three times the slaves to the owner of the Golden Cap. After the wedding, Quelala commanded the Winged Monkeys never to bother Gayelette again, and it can be presumed that the princess and her husband lived happily ever after.
Some say that Gayelette and Quelala are the parents of Glinda, the Good Witch of the South. I particularly like this idea

Now, somehow or another, the Wicked Witch of the West acquired the Golden Cap, either by foul play, or fair trade. I don't know for sure. It is only due to the Golden Cap that she has power over the Winged Monkeys, not because they're her pets or even want to be her servants.

I'll get around to coloring it later. At the moment I'm sketching Nick Chopper (the Tin Woodman) and Nimmie Aimee.
Haha, if you look closely, all of the little places and background images are parts of the story.

love this pic. quick question: which authors follow the Gayelette/Glinda connection? I like the idea of them being mother/daughter and would explain why Gayelette lives in a ruby palace in purple dominant Gillikin Country.

Thank you for the compliment!!
I'm going to try to get it colored soon... |'D
Well, about the Glinda/Gayelette connection, not any "official" Oz historian has written about it, but you can read on one of the fan websites, The Hidden History of Oz, an article speculating the potential relationship between the two. This particular one mentions them being related, [link] , but I'd recommend searching through the website for other articles mentioning them.
Those were my thoughts exactly, considering Baum wasn't all too concerned with continuity (Import rubies to a purple country? How did they get there any way?)

Haha, thanks. I hope to get it colored soon, but I just haven't had much time.
Actually, the reason that I haven't had time is because I have been making Scraps, and she's been taking up most of my time. All of her little patches are driving me insane! XDD

I understand! I tried making a Patchwork Girl years ago....I quickly found out I am not good at sewing.
Though I did make an awesome Scarecrow outfit complete with a blue hat. Too bad my cat peed on it.

That's too bad, do you have any pictures of it?
My cats tend to do things like that as well...

I'm not the best at sewing, but skilled enough to make her adequately. Although, I'm making her in miniature rather than life-sized. I don't have enough fabric for that!!

I may have some pictures, not of the Scarecrow himself (which in my opinion was pretty awesome except he was stuffed with hay and we know how he'd feel about that!) but of the hat or me wearing it.
I was like 13 so I was in that stage where I hated having my picture taken.
Maybe I'll post it if I find one. I think my Grandmother took some of me the year I was the Scarecrow and my best friend was the Mad Hatter.

Well, if you find any picture of yourself, or the scarecrow, I would love to see them!
I haven't done any Oz-related costumes before, but I think it would be a very fun project to undertake. Perhaps one day...
I was the same when I was that age, and I still am to some extent... I'm not a very photogenic person. lol

I eventually outgrew my shyness, but I tend to regret my pictures, lol.

Yeah, I'm the same.
Actually, I went through a "rebellious phase" where I grew my hair out very long, but I regret it whenever I see the pictures... lol
My hair is still pretty long, though, but not that long.

every detail of this drawing are lovely; but I especially like Quelala ( handsome boy, I love the sleeves of his suit) and the Golden Cap. You have done a thorough job, there are many details

Aww, thank you. I wanted him to look very "old-fashioned" with the clothing style of the 16th-17th century.
The golden cap, and the rest of the picture, was meant to resemble the style of Art Nouveau. That particular style influenced Neill's designs quite a bit, like Ozma's design for example.

the "old-fashioned" is a cute election, I think it works for this character. yeah, I've noticed the resemblance of her with Ozma, I wondered if it was intentional XD

Thanks, I thought it suited the story and its characters.
Yes, I added the flowers to hint at Ozma, although they're not poppies.
Actually, almost all women in Art Nouveau style pictures have "Ozma flowers."

Who knows, the flowers on the head can be a fashion accessory in the aesthetics and the dress of Oz XD

Possibly! I don't know all that much about their culture, seeing as I've never been to Oz, but it would be interesting if wearing flowers had some significance there. Perhaps the flowers symbolize a person's power, or their social rank?

Anything is possible, but certainly, the flowers in the hair can be a pleasant addition to characters of Oz
