Description
This is the finished piece using Cathedral lineart as the basis. This is the Le Mans cathedral in France. The view shows the clerestory windows of the choir through the aisle arches with the viewer looking upwards. The reference was from a book entitled "The Rise of the Gothic" by William Anderson with photography by Clive Hicks. This took me several hours because I wanted to make sure I didn't lose all of the fine details when I began shading. Overall, the process from lineart to completed piece took about 6-7 hours.
6B and 2B graphite pencils.

Well you did justice to the cathedral, and it's coming from someone who lives in Le Mans^^

Thank you! It must be great to be able to have the cathedral in the city where you live. I would just stare at it for one hour every day and then maybe go inside and stare some more.

Beautifully done, you have a lot of talent! 6-7 hours, to me, is fairly fast to pull off such a well done piece like this so I take my hat off to you For me to attempt architectual things like this Id say Id be looking at a few days of work!

Thank you. I did the piece on my birthday so I really wanted to finish it on the same day. I'm normally not so careful with making sure all the lines are straight but I figured that a cathedral drawing needed them. I also have the lineart in my gallery.

Thank you. I'm not sure how you would be able to color it. The stonework is mostly one color. I don't know if the effect would be as dramatic colored as it is black and white.

Yeah, churches are tough to color; especially the inside. The exterior is easier and of course the stained glass windows have plenty of color.

exteriors too look better in b/w, I feel...usually the stained glass has blackened now...

Thanks. This one took awhile but I really wanted it to come out right (with actual straight lines and everything). I even scanned the lineart for it in because I thought it came out really well and I don't normally do that.

It's amazing to see the lineart and then its completed form.
Your shading is so dramatic.

Thanks. It took awhile but I'm glad I didn't rush it and attended to all the small details. I've wanted to do a cathdral picture for some time and figured I shouldn't shirk on it.

Thank you. I've always wanted to draw one of the cathedrals; especially the interiors where there are angles and lines and shadows everywhere.

Yeah.. If only I weren't so lazy. =_=
We were just learning about cathedrals and Parthenons- ancient Greece and Rome I guess.

The cathedrals are more middle ages but they do have similarities to the Greek and Roman buildings.

Oh? Is this one of the newer ones?
(..they still make them..?)
[slightly clueless]

No this cathedral (CathΓ©drale St-Julien du Mans) was built in the 11th-13th centuries but they do still build them. They're building this very huge and elaborate one in Barcelona called the "Sagrada Familia" that is supposed to take until the end of the century to complete.

Oooh, are they going to make it more modern, or stick to the old technology and style?
Oh wait.
It's a cathedral so it should look the same, no...?
[is slightly lost]

Probably a little of both. There are more architectural styles and technologies available for buildings nowadays.

Thank you. The lineart was promising and I didn't want to mess it up while shading so I made sure to be very careful.
