Description
Su-15 symbolize a negative side of Soviet Union in a sense, cruel and inhumane of militarism. In some texts later types of Su-15 could load four R-98 missiles, but I have not seen Su-15s carrying four R-98s in photos.

There WERE no positives sides of the Soviet Union's governing methods. All the same, beautiful, beautiful aircraft.

Huh?
For me Su-15 always symbolized fond chilhood memories.
I had a toy Su-15 when I was a kid, it was one of the better made toy fighter planes in the USSR.

It's negative connotation comes from it being used to shoot down a civilian airliner in 1983: Korean Air Lines 007

But that situation was the airliner's crew's fault, not the Su-15, it's pilot or the Soviet government.

Pretty sure if the interceptor would have tried to establish radio contact, or flown ANYWHERE in front of the airliner, the crew would have realized their mistake. The "slave to the ground" and "shoot first" mentalities are wholly detrimental to a good outcome.Β

The interceptor has flown ahead, even fired warning shots. Though, unfortunately, Su-15 was not equipped with tracer rounds, but the cannon burst flare is still highly visible at nighttime.
The blame still lies with the airliner's criminally negligent crew, that failed to properly respond to the signs of going off course. For example, they were unable to contact ground control via VHF radio and had to rely on another aircraft, KAL-015 to relay it's position. Considering that KAL-015 was following the very same route, albeit behind, and was perfectly able to perform such a task, that should've been a warning. How could the crew of the top-tech passenger airliner, with multiple reserved navigation systems not notice that they went off-course for several hours, is beyond me.
Osipovich also stated attempts to contact the aircraft at emergency frequency. And while the airliner's flight recorder show no recording of communication,Β worth noting, that this was not the first incident with Korean Airlines in Soviet airspace. In 1978 another KAL Boeing has invaded Soviet airspace and was fired upon. That time, it managed to crash land atΒ KorpiyarviΒ lake, and there were only two fatalities. The interesting part is that in 1978 KAL pilots admitted to deliberately ignoring the Soviet interceptor's commands. Gives an interesting perspective.

Great work, Hylajaponica.
But those permanent talks about korean Boeing-747 and evil USSR makes me sad. Su-15 is not a symbol, it's just a plane.

Yeah, it is a real disappointment.

Awesome job. I always liked the Su-15, but it's unfortunately a somewhat rare subject. So, great choice.

Yeah, people associate sukhoi and Russian aircraft with the Flanker.

Nowadays they do, while in the past (before the Soviet Union downfall) the most popular ones were the MiGs. Thus the Su-15 was always quite obscure.

The Flanker is too stylish as my dear soviet aircrafts.

Yeah, KAL902/007 incidents cast shadows on the Su-15βs career...
