Description “Are you sure this is safe..?” Sharon said cautiously as they walked hand in hand in the dark woods amidst the light summer mist rising from the damp grass. They had stayed too long at that costume party, their parents were probably wondering where they’d gone, if not searching for them already.

“Of course! I used to take this shortcut every time to go to school! Trust me, I know where we’re going!” Tamara smiled confidently at the girl holding her hand. She had actually no clue as to where they were. She had lost sight of any familiar point of reference long ago, but she wasn’t about to give up just yet. She felt like she had to impress Sharon somehow, so they kept moving deeper and deeper into the sheltered yet unsettling dark.

The thicket left leaves and pieces of bark on their clothing that was in no way adequate for them to be in. Tamara pressed her cowgirl hat on her head, not wanting it to get stuck in the low branches. Her legs were getting more and more scratched and bruised by the low bushes. In hindsight, both the idea of wearing shorts and going through these woods were not the smartest decisions she made that night, but it was too late to turn back.

Just as Tamara was starting to lose hope, a fait glow emerged from behind the thick foliage of the shrubs.
“There, I told you we were going in the right direction!” She said boldly, hiding her relief in seeing what she thought was the way out of the forest. Sharon tightened her grip on her hand, sensing they were in a place they were not supposed to be in, where unknown forces reigned still wild.

Her feelings were confirmed once they stumbled out into the glowing clearing, massive decorated stones now circling them, towering over their reckless teen heads, blue runes and veins shining ominously in a blue-green hue.

“Tamara, what is this place..?” Sharon whispers meekly, shying out behind the other girl, whose legs were trembling, but her expression still feigned some sort of certainty.

“Nothing we have to worry about, let’s just keep moving..”

Just as she attempted a step in any direction, the trembling in her legs made her stumble to the ground, draggin Sharon down with her. She looked down at her legs, seeing her body extend unnaturally, distorting into a shape she couldn’t identify.

“Tamara, what’s going on!” She shrieked, seeing the transformation happening before her eyes, a slow and gentle hum emanating from the glowing stones. She went to touch her, but every time she extended her arm it felt like the distance kept growing… Or was she shrinking?

Sharon looked down at her own body, seeing her native american outfit flopping out of size around her.
Her mind was getting clouded by mixed thoughts, fear and giddiness, her face distorting into half a smile as tears ran down her face.

Tamara looked over to her partner, leaning over her petite figure and cradling her to her slightly growing chest, the pain and realization from her transformation making her cry too.

“I’m so sorry Sharon, I -” She gulped back a whimper of pain, looking back at her now fully transformed lower body. She held back a gasp at the equine body that had taken her leg’s place, almost in awe at her new form. She looked back at her shrinking girlfriend, now giggling with diaphanous wings slowly sprouting from her shaking shoulders.

“Tamara, please, can I ask you a favor… while I’m still half myself?” She struggled to say, her mind being overtaken with the fairy tricksterness of the form she was turning into. Tamara pulled herself up awkwardly, tears still in her eyes.

“Of course, anything!” She picked Sharon up in her arms, her costume hanging loose on her small body, while her own short jeans lay in tatters on the ground.
The human too big yet to be a fairy, but comparable to a small child, clung to her lover’s shoulders, sliding on her equine back in one fluid movement.

“Take me for a ride, while I still can… You look beautiful…”. Her arms wrapped halfway around Tamara’s waist, in a silent plea. Tamara looked down at her and swallowed her sadness as much as she could.

“I’ll try…” She took an awkward step, balancing herself on her new four legs. With a flick of her chestnut tail, she took another tentative step, quickly finding a rhythm by thinking about all her horse riding lessons, finding herself galloping in the clearing, her own excited giggles mixing with Sharon’s. She had never felt more free, and even if she had lost her human life, she had gained something new. She opened her arms to welcome the fresh air on her bare skin, prancing around in the night light.

She came to a halt not feeling her lover’s weight on her back anymore, looking around on the ground if she had perhaps fallen.

“Sharon? Sharon are you-”

“Alright? I’m more than alright!” A bluish figure twirled and glowed in the air in front of her in the hue of the stones of the fairy circle. She looked radiant, tears still slowly trickling down her cheeks, but a wide smile was gracing her features.

“Look at me, I’m so tiny!” She giggled, leaning towards Tamara’s face. The latter giggled, cupping her hands beneath her as if she could fall any minute. “I’m a tiny fairy, and you’re a crazy centaur!”

Tamara melted in a watery smile. It was still the girl she knew and loved on some level, just with unbelievably high hype levels.

“Sure looks like it.” She heaved a melancholic sigh as she eased herself to the ground. Her eyes followed the erratic flight of Sharon in the air as she descended and perched herself on her shoulder.

“So, what do we do now?” Tamara asks, the happy feelings she had experienced just earlier being overwhelmed by the thoughts of what she had to leave behind. She felt helpless, if not at least relieved that she was not alone in this. “How are we going to tell our parents?”

“Simple: we don’t” Sharon snuggled up to Tamara’s still damp cheek. “This is our new life, we don’t go back from here.”

She took off and hovered in front of Tamara, extending a tiny hand to her with a mischievous grin.

“Come on.”

And with that, Tamara and Sharon were never heard of again, if not for some curious people venturing those deep dark forests at night, claiming they could hear two girls laugh gleefully under the starlight’s magic, in each other’s company, in each other’s love.

I had almost forgotten I had you do a sketch based on that short idea where two friends encountered a fairy ring. It complements the picture very well.
