Description I did these 3 walk cycles of my friends (the ones with the silliest walks) to practice on my drawing consistency, my arcs of motion, and well...my walk cycles.

I'm pretty proud of these. It was good practice, that it was.

These are great, though a few problems are noticeable when watching the legs.

The first walk is mostly alright, but the leg closest to us looks like it isn't arcing correctly. It's hard to tell, but when he brings the leg forward, its either not high enough, or far enough in front of him. I thinks its that he 'un-pops' his knee too soon.

The third walk (and also the funniest) could use an extra drawing or two at the end of the cycle. His foot barely contacts the ground. He never actually steps with that foot; it just reappears behind him again and has this slidey effect. If you were to use this animation to actually move him in an environment, you'd see that he'd 'jump' forward every other step.

I have no critiques for the middle one. Its animation is simple and quick, so any mistakes would be unnoticeable; if any.

Thanks!

You're right about the first walk cycle, it's a little off. :\

But, I'm not entirely sure what you're saying about the third...the way it is now, it would definitely not look right in an environment, but I would mess with the placement of the character per frame to push him forward with every step.

For some reason I'm finding the timing is off... don't know why. Have you read Richard Williams Animation Survival Kit?

hyperboy In reply to geoxen [2008-12-19 00:03:03 +0000 UTC]

I own it!

What do you mean by timing?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

geoxen In reply to hyperboy [2008-12-21 00:58:08 +0000 UTC]

Well, what I think it needs is more frames. Maybe one or two more, only because I find the feet move too fast. Also, I'm looking at it now and... well... the feet are sliding across the floor when they contact the ground.

They're not quite planted, but really its only tiny things. You're lucky you're doing this in flash, doing it on paper is a lot harder.

How much have you read? (not trying to be an ass here, just curious)

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

hyperboy In reply to geoxen [2008-12-21 01:11:08 +0000 UTC]

Well, I could've used a frame here or there, but the general pacing came out right.

I'm pretty sure that the feet are supposed to slide...if they were in motion, it would look right, but you're looking at a character that's basically walking in place.

I've animated on paper, too. It doesn't actually improve anything. It's just a tradionalist approach to something that has been simplified for a reason. Flash animation allows you to bypass all the unnecessary mistakes you will make while drawing and goes straight to the actual movement.

I read the whole book.

Alrighty then, just keep at it though. It isn't easy to begin with, and you'll only improve anyways.

I think the one of Galvo looks the most well-done.
Though that last walk was pretty cool, I guess I was a bit thrown off by the unchanging head and expression. o w o
I just finished taking a 10-week animation course, but eh!
Head-bouncing's great in all cases.

aw, I like how you drew gabe's head differently for each frame, vs. the other two floating with it. the only thing being keeping it more consistent, like someone else already mentioned I think. the other two work though, regardless. and now next time I visit over there I'm gonna be watching gabe walk haha c: nice job!

hyperboy In reply to cronobreaker [2008-12-12 00:24:29 +0000 UTC]

It is hard...because you have to keep in mind that you'll be looping the same ~10 frames, and mistakes will become that much more evident.

I like that Gabe's hair slowly crawls down his face as he walks, like it's threatening to take over and make him a wolfman.

I am convinced that was your secret intention.

These are pretty damn keen, but I already told you that. The only thing I'd say is that it seems like at least Michelle's is a little...short?

I dunno, the legs just look a little jerky to me.

But Gabe's and Aaron's just get more hilarious the more I watch them. Especially when you listen to music cause it subconsciously syncs up.

Well done brother.
