I'm not sure too if they are splitted in genders, but I like how they reproduces: when a chao is in mating season he/she sits on the ground and flowers grows all around him/her. Then you take another chao, you put him/her in front of him/her and if they like each other they starts rubbing each against the other and a chao egg pops out.
