Description Mermaid fetishists of the world (all, what, six of you not including myself?) I have a confession; bodies of water terrify the hell out of me. Not only did I never actually learn how to swim, but there's just something I find terrifying about rivers and oceans, just the fact that theoretically anything could be under the surface that you can't see. I don't even mean natural aquatic predators like Sharks or anything like that, most species of Shark are actually not as dangerous as movies make them out to be, what scares me about water is that there could be something under there that you would never expect, something you wouldn't even think exists, it captures the imagination and sends it to strange places, the places that know what scares you more than anybody can know, potentially even yourself. As much as it terrifies me though, that's part of why it's always fascinated me, why works of fiction about the ocean, mythology relating to it, and even the science of the real thing appeal to me so much. Did you know that we have more information about outer space than we have about our own oceans? Personally, I think scientists have discovered something they're not telling us and now they're trying to escape.

There was even this one time where I was at a mini golf course, and keep in mind, this is not even a childhood memory, this was shortly after graduating from high school, that's how much of a gigantic puss I am. I was attending a friend's graduation party, and I wanted absolutely no part in getting anywhere near the water hazard in fear of falling in. Now, I'm sure that the water hazard wasn't actually that deep. If falling into it was dangerous in any way, they probably wouldn't have been allowed to have it without putting some kind of safety rail around it or something to prevent that very thing. It was genuinely hard to gauge the shallowness of it because the water was tinted an unnaturally dark shade of blue, it was like a navy blue, probably for that very reason, to make it look deeper than it really was by having it so you can't see the bottom, because anything shallower than a kiddie pool would have just been boring. Something that almost seems like you could drown in it at least wouldn't be boring. But the fact that I could see these industrial tubes just below the surface, that I now imagine were probably part of some kind of filtering system to keep the water clean, somehow gave me this mental image of an animatronic sea monster sleeping below the surface, ready to attack if disturbed. Even pulling up satellite views of this golf course on Google Maps shows some dark shapes in the water, as though something was under it. As aware as I am that the most intimidating thing that was probably at that golf course was the amount of ice cream flavors they were serving in the building, I still have a twisted obsession with what could have been down there even if it more than likely wasn't.

But that's only true in our universe, what about the Flannelverse? I figured somebody should probably explore it there, and it looks like Zonta's about to have fun with what she found. Good for her. Glad it's not me.
