Description
Behold, my take on the Advanced Droid Starfighter from Galactic Battlegrounds.Lore: A development of Haor Chall Engineering's Variable Geometry Self-Propelled Battle Droid line, the Mark II or 'Condor' Droid was first prototyped as early as the Blockade of Naboo, and, similar to its Crow and Vulture siblings (Designed in the image of a Xi Char neonate and adult drone respectively), was designed in the image of a mature Xi Char queen. Featuring improved maneuverability, top speed, an independent droid brain of increased quality compared to later Vulture models, and atmospheric flight shaping, the Condor also boasted an improved weapons load of two triple heavy blaster arrays, one per wing, and a multirole ordnance pod fitted with both missile launch tubes as well as the typical energy torpedo launchers of the line.
Serving in a supplementary role during the initial invasion before being withdrawn with most of the blockade, the Condors missed the ensuing space battle, preventing them from having any lasting impact on the conflict. Despite this misstep the Neimoidians were satisfied with the design as a supplement to their extant Vulture and Scarab fighter and Coyote and Jackal Bomber models over the alternative 'Buzzard' droid project, with the Condors seeing further service with the cream of the Trade Defense Force in the years preceding the Clone Wars, defending Neimoidia and her purse worlds as well as providing fighter escort for warships carrying important Trade Federation dignitaries.
Originally produced in limited numbers for the TDF throughout the Separatist Crisis, the mass production of the fighter early in the Clone Wars led to increased Republic losses against elite flocks of these deadly machines, necessitating a devastating assault on Charros IV, the home of Haor Chall Engineering and the site of the Condor's primary production lines. After a brutal month-long battle, the Republic seized the cathedral-factories that were aligned with the separatists, destroying much of Charros IV's infrastructure in the fighting and causing the Condor and other high-end HCE models to fade from the frontline, though some Baktoid Fleet Ordnance factories still produced small quantities of the droids for the remainder of the war.
The remaining units, precious as they were, were kept in reserve for special assignment and the defense of key CIS worlds and facilities such as Serenno, Raxus Secundus, Cato Neimoidia, and Mygeeto. Most of these 'elite guard' forces of Condor fighters were wiped out during the Outer Rim Sieges and at the Battles of Coruscant and Utapau. In light of such losses few squadrons survived to see the end of the war, with the surviving units being deactivated when Darth Vader issued the shutdown order on Mustafar. Of these precious surviving machines, all were either lost in deep space or seized by the Empire for testing purposes and use as 'aggressor' and target drones.
By the Battle of Yavin functional Condor units were practically mythical, and few outside certain historical circles and the Clone Wars veterans who faced these impressive war machines even remember they existed at all. Though rumors always abound of lost CIS weapons caches and fleet anchorages defended by deadly and unusual droid starfighters of a make unrecognized by most spacer.
