Description
The drip of the rain against the windowsillMatched the gentle whispering of the trees
As they bent to the will of the persistent wind,
And corresponded in perfect harmony
With the methodical crackling of the fire
That accompanied the melody of hushed voices.
The town had long ago been deserted,
And the scene was one of desolation and foreboding.
A gentle fog submersed the forsaken streets,
And penetrated the air with mal-intent
Leaving nowhere a place of refuge.
If one traversed the streets,
And made their way with reckless abandonβ¦
They may stumble upon the cantankerous melody
And peer through the westward window
That was draped in veils of water,
And still steadily dripping on the sill.
The fireplace was a warm glow behind the glass pane
Casting a subtle orange aura
Over the long wooden table standing in the middle of the hall
And the blurred figures bent over it
Deep in a subdued conversation
As the crackling flames licked at the charred wood
And finally reduced to smoldering embers,
The sun that had steadily illuminated the haze
Dove into the depths of the horizon
And sent the scene plunging into utter darkness.
Everything was silent,
Save the resolute drip of water from the sill of the westward window.
