Remember this? A friend certainly did. In that picture, I mixed Sarah and Needlemouse!Sonic's fur and ears because Sarah's pitch-black hair against a pitchblack background would look jarring, like the upper half of her face was cut off or something. Here, her fur is a tad darker, like it's a blend of her real hair and Sonic's fur.

Seeing how popular the FNF Sonic.EXE mod got, in spite of how many controversies X seems to attract (To make a long story short, some planned enemies for the mod never saw the light of day because their creators were creepers (Though in EXE's creator's case, she was falsely accused by actual creepers), and JCTheHyena lost the rights to Sonic.EXE for similar reasons), it got me thinking why people loved it after years of picking apart the original Creepypasta. I used to watch this channel called GameToons, who did FNF videos. Many people have many issues with their videos, apparently stolen animation (Don't quote me on that one), getting lore wrong (Fleetway Sonic is treated as an alternate form for X, Suicide Mouse is actually trying to stay alive, Hank is now a mopey soldier who feels alone after Sanford and Deimos died when he made it clear he hates them in Project Nexus and loves fighting, Ruv is somehow killed despite being immortal, Daisy from Wrath Soul is treated as evil), many people find Player!Boyfriend insufferable, myself included. (Honestly, MaimyMamo, SMG4, the Blueballs Incident, FNF Soft, and the Sonic.EXE mod are the takes on BF I'd call decent or good, the others are either flat as a brick like the original, or genuinely horrible characters, like HD, Gametoons' Player, and even RecD's take on him managed to reach annoying levels of stupid that'd give Goku a run for his money).

Even putting all that aside, an issue I see with Gametoons and the original Sonic.EXE story is that they take themselves too seriously. A big reason people liked the mod was that the people behind it, like everyone else over the age of 8, was well aware that JCTheHyena's story was stupid and tried way too hard to make Sonic scary, with no self-awareness. The Pedo-Hyena went nuts when his story was put on the Trollpasta Wiki. The mod wasn't devoid of horrifying imagery, but it had a lot of humor and levity in it, rather than just "BF gets sucked into Sonic game at 3 AM and has no chance of survival against smug prick wearing Sonic's face". X himself slowly goes mad as he's actually losing for once, and even the corrupted Eggman he controls laughs at him for it. Lord X doesn't take his fight with BF seriously, snarking at the player if he wins. Majin Sonic is implied to just be trying to have fun, even if his sense of it is a bit warped. Fleetway Super Sonic straight-up makes fun of the original Creepypasta and, like Majin, draws more from horror elements from actual Sonic material rather than just adding blood and body-horror. Even the grimmer Needlemouse and X-Terion have more compelling backstories than just being an alien that tortures Souls for fun. And Sunky, Coldsteel, and Sanic.EXE aren't even meant to be scary.

When Gametoons tackled the Sonic.EXE mod in multiple videos, it took the mod's horror completely seriously, with little to no jokes about it. it's just "Player and Girlfriend wander into a Sonic game and get menaced by evil Sonics", yes, that does include Majin, who in this version roars like a damn dinosaur and wears a coat he made from Tails' skin. I'm serious. They even treat Sunky more seriously. Sunky. They also did this with Pibby by the way. Even Pibby's own teasers had humor in them, but here, Gametoons has this big crossover with Talking Ben in it, and no, they don't do any jokes with him, he's treated seriously. Among Us Veteran and Henry Stickmin Captain have a few jokes, but aside from that, it's treated seriously. RecD did "Pibby Huggy Wuggy" as a joke, and Gametoons uses the same concept for serious drama. What I'm getting at is that it helps to have some self-awareness in your work, taking it too seriously is a one-way ticket to becoming a laughing stock. JCTheHyena made this mistake and his story got ridiculed for it. Then he got ridiculed for different things, but let's not dwell on that.

On a lighter and even less relevent note, this pic gives me a chance to answer a question nobody asked me. I said here that both Sarah!Needlemouse and Dr. Robotnik from The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog are DLC for a nonexistant game about cartoons. The reason why isn't just because Sonic had cartoons. Needlemouse does differ from Sonic enough to be her own character, and the same can be said for Robotnik in cartoons. I said here that Eggman probably goes through more changes in adaptations than any main Sonic character, with even Sonic and Amy's attitudes seeming more similar in current adaptations (Sonic is easygoing and lost his 'Too cool for school' attitude, and Amy got more personality beyond 'Sonic fangirl', even if it's clear she still has feelings for him). In the main games, Eggman sees himself as a misunderstood genius, that he knows better than anyone else on Earth, and it's his way or no way. Even the games bounce between how evil he gets with that (Colors, Lost World, and Forces have him acting eviler than usual) but in many cartoons, SATAM, Adventures, and Boom, he's aware he's evil and relishes in it. SATAM Robotnik was one of the nastiest, if not THE nastiest Eggman ever officially made. Adventures Robotnik commited at least one attempt at terrorism and was generally fueled by hatred, but he was way more comedic about it. Boom Eggman was a chummy evil scientest, essentially the Doofenshmirtz to Sonic's Perry. Since all of these Eggmen, especially the first two, are that different, they'd probably qualify as different enough from their game counterpart to count for a cartoon game. I went with Adventures because I like even the eviler Eggmen to be funny, plus he's the one with all the memes. For a similar reason, the DLC added Stitch, Rapunzal, Hiro and Baymax, because their shows actually add on to the movies they spawned from. None of Stitch's cousins were in the original movie, and Tangled and BH6's shows pick up after the movies and add to their worlds. But enough rambling.
