So it's that time of year, the time of year where we get to do something that's usually frowned upon all other times of the year...that's right, I'm talking about all things pumpkin spice. But why are we so fixed on the spice of pumpkins this time of year? Why does this obsession suddenly come about? Well...right here, for Halloween 2019, I believe I may have the answer to that. It's a weird American marketing thing in the early fall, mostly.
In spite of what it sounds like, it's not a pumpkin flavoring - rather, it's the specific set of spices that traditionally go into pumpkin pie. Thanks to Starbucks in particular, this mix (which is admittedly legit quite good in a latte) became an overmarketed Flavor Of Fall.
The Dune reference joke about it is, "He who controls the pumpkin spice, controls the white women." Not that it's exclusively them who go for it, though...
