Description Made with a combination of Photoshop and Flash cs3.

The Lion King copied a great deal off Kimba: The White Lion. And even if you like The Lion King better, even if they were originally going to make a 'tribute,' they never asked for permission and never credited Tezuka Inc. for the theft they never apologized for.

You can be a fan of TLK and not have the guilty conscious trying to justify a wrong Disney did. But don't try and deny it. That's what lets these things happen over and over again. Instead, be happy that Kimba was around to "inspire" Disney.

For more about the Kimba v. Simba debate, there's a really outdated website over here .

Look up the actual story behind the controversy. Yes, Osamu died, but there's people who still held rights of Kimba before the rights of Kimba "Went to mystery".

Those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it. I'm not going to be the one to tell studio executives that it's a-ok to steal the intellectual property of others just because they couldn't get permissions. That doesn't mean I don't enjoy some Lion King product (though I'm a bigger fan of the Broadway show than the movie). But I'm not going to shut up about the incident either.

Kimba is like a rip-off of Hamlet
so please can we all stop butthirting over which is the original and enjoy both

i-stamp In reply to Julesworld99 [2013-05-19 17:13:42 +0000 UTC]

No, actually, it's not. The Hamlet inspirations were added to The Lion King presumably to cheapen it further. Claw is not Kimba's uncle, and his mother's death is equally as important as his father's.

I love this stamp. c: It's blatantly obvious Kimba was one of the main inspirations for The Lion King. Actually, I've read on numerous websites that The Lion King was originally going to be a Kimba movie, but due to copyright issues they couldn't make it and they had to change the storyline and everything. The best proof of this is the picture from early production depicting a white lion cub. The Lion King was also originally going to be called King of the Jungle and was going to be released in 1993. I do not think The Lion King was a copy of Kimba, because it wasn't. Although there are similarities there aren't enough to make it a copy. I view The Lion King as a kind of tribute to Kimba and Tezuka. I do wish Disney would have just admitted that Kimba inspired The Lion King though. If they would have then there wouldn't be this war going on between Kimba and Lion King fans today. <:c And it seems like lots of people fail to mention that Disney was the inspiration for Kimba! xD I just wish people would stop arguing over this. I'm both a Kimba fan and a Lion King fan. They're both great stories.

Tezuka and Disney had meet before and animation gatherings, and Disney said he wanted to make something attributing astro-boy.

This is big proof the disney corporation is very much aware and watches Tezuka's work. Thus, the writers of Lion King most definitely also knew of Tezuka's works including Kimba.

So that is all fine. Disney made The Lion King based off Kimba. Both are great films.

It was just as SOON as Disney denied they referenced the work and that everything was 'coincidental' that was a little messed up. Something that should be fixed.

But this controversy is old. It stirrs up hate from both fandoms and pretty much puts out a negative vibe, saying that we can't enjoy both movies. Yes, we should acknowledge the fact that Disney may have ripped off Kimba [I say may because of fact that Disney was trying to create a Kimba the White Lion Movie, but it got scrapped because the creator of Kimba died, hence making it impossible to get copyrights. I have no clue.], but we shouldn't keep beating around a dead bush that will produce nothing but dead leaves.
P.S. They made a Simba the King Lion show that takes place in a jungle and that's hugely similar to Kimba's show, except Bambi and Sher Khan are in it.

Not a surprise. It's not as if Disney was making original movies early on (with the exception of Fantasia and excluding Pixar movies). They took from Kimba, and the public domain (which they, ironically try keeping their stuff out of).

It is so unbelievably clear that Disney stole the ideas from the Kimba, it could not be more damn obvious! The people who disagree are just blind fans. "FUUU- DISNEY NO STEAL ANYTING!"

Like when Disney stated in an early interview they were re-creating Kimba, how in an early film real, Simba was shown to be white and in a jungle. It also conveniently comes out soon after the original creator dies. Coincidence? I think not. Open your eyes people, you may have been Disney fans all your lives but the fact is they stole from Kimba. Please get over it.

The similarities between Kimba and Bambi are superficial and nowhere near as saturate or obvious. One is an apple and an orange, the other is a Mandarin orange and a tangerine.

Actually the Lion King was based off a real African tale centuries ago, but had to make it children friendly. I forgot what it was called, but I remember we had to learn it in my English class.

The "there's some obscure folklore I heard third hand from somewhere undisclosed" is the second oldest excuse in the book (next to 'nothing is original.') The screen-writes and storyboards are available, no mention of any African tale is given. Though there is a storyboard that has a young white lion and a title of 'Jungle Emperor.' Much like Jungle Emperor Leo.

There we go, the Lion King is based off of The Story of Sundiata, a Mali epic.

And that's like saying The Princess and the Frog is a huge rip off, but you don't see anyone complaining about that.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

i-stamp In reply to EyKitkat [2012-05-20 17:38:52 +0000 UTC]

Those two stories have absolutely nothing in common.
Here's a summary: "In the "Epic of Sundiata" (also spelled Son-Jara or Sundjata) NarΓ© Maghann KonatΓ© (also called Maghan Kon Fatta or Maghan the Handsome) was a Mandinka king who one day received a divine hunter at his court. The hunter predicted that if KonatΓ© married an ugly woman, she would give him a son who would one day be a mighty king. NarΓ© Maghann KonatΓ© was already married to Sassouma BeretΓ© and had a son by her, Dankaran Toumani KeΓ―ta. However, when two TraorΓ© hunters from the Do kingdom presented him an ugly; hunchbacked woman named Sogolon, he remembered the prophecy and married her. She soon gave birth to a son, Sundiata Keita, who was unable to walk throughout his childhood. Despite his physical weakness, the king still granted Sundiata his own griot at young age; this was in order to have them grow together and provide constant consultation as was custom.[1] With the death of NarΓ© Maghann KonatΓ© (c. 1224), his first son, Dankaran Tuman, assumed the throne despite KonatΓ©'s wishes that the prophecy be respected. Sundiata and his mother, who now had given birth to two daughters and adopted a second son from KonatΓ©'s third wife NamandjΓ©, suffered the scorn of the new king and his mother. After an insult against Sogolon, Sundiata requested an iron rod from the blacksmith Nounfari, which he used to pull himself upright and walk. None the less, the hatred of Sassouma BeretΓ© and Dankaran Toumani Keita soon drove Sundiata, his mother, and his two sisters into exile in the Mema kingdom.

Meanwhile, Soumaoro KantΓ©, cruel sorcerer king of Sosso, attacked the Mandinka kingdom, causing Dankaran Toumani Keita to take flight in fear. The oppressed Mandinka people then sent for the exiled Sundiata. Forging a coalition of neighboring small kingdoms, Sundiata waged a war against the Sosso, finally Sundiata was later crowned with the title "Mansa," or "king of kings", as the first ruler of the Mali Empire. He soon set about organizing the nucleus of the empire, presenting the Gbara of nobles and notables at his coronation with an oral constitution known as the Kouroukan Fouga. His model for government would guide the empire into greatness and beyond its zenith toward its eventual dissolution in 1645. His exploits have even been compared to those of Alexander the Great by some griots.[2]" - Wiki

And it doesn't explain the much more specific aesthetic choices and character scenes that TLK lifted right off Kimba. Things like the father lion dying and then appearing in the clouds to encourage his cub son to take the throne from a usurping evil uncle lion with dark hair, a wounded left eye, who employs comedic relief hyenas, and battles Kimba's friend including a colorful bird who's the king's aid, a wise old mandrill who is called a baboon, a warthog, meerkat, all in the kingdom overlooked by a jutting cliff top which is ideal for lion-roaring panoramics, as well as a creepy bone graveyard, a tangle of thorn nettles, a fight where burning sand and cinders are scooped into the villian's eye...and so on and so forth.
