a big part of art as we know it today is self expression, taking what is within and transforming it into something tangible, something you can put outside of yourself. the result itself isn't really the work of art. it is the process.

this process can also be understood through the psychological idea of "sublimation":
a mature type of defense mechanism, in which socially unacceptable impulses or idealizations are transformed into socially acceptable actions or behavior, possibly resulting in a long-term conversion of the initial impulse.

while artists use this process to help them work through emotional states or thoughts they otherwise struggle to deal with, it is also an opportunity for their audience to experience emotions or connect with aspects of their own self they couldn't quite identify before.

this is why artists can have such a cult followings: to many, these artists become the "voice", or vessel, for these internal processes we struggle to fully identify or express. they become an integral part of our identities. it goes beyond the realm of parasocial relationship. it is internalized.
