You first of all need a more advanced image program than Paint, like Paint.NET, GIMP, Photoshop, something that will allow at least transparent/translucent layers. A very simple watermark is a logo or piece of text, with a low transparency setting on the text layer. More complex logo uses can use options like Grain Merge or Subtract or Multiply or Soft Light or whatever works best for the image; ones that will slightly miscolor the image through the image/text are better, theft-wise, than a simple 25% transparent text layer, because the miscoloration is harder to cure than a monochrome darkening offered by plain black text.
deviantART has a built-in watermark feature that uses a generic watermark image it adds to your image; however, it's only available if you don't post the image at its original size. When it asks you how big to make the preview window, select something slightly smaller and the checkbox for the watermark feature will become clickable. Just disable the Download option before you post and your image should be safe.
