There were a few questions regarding the classification system of non-humans, so I decided to do a quick spiel about it.Probably will do some minor tweaks as I go down the road, but this is the basic structure!Β

What class would a uraeus be?
If you don't know what it is, it's basically like a normal sized cobra with eagle wings. Oh and did I mention they have flame-thrower breath! They were Egyptian monsters, and a symbol of Ra the sun god.

Eastern dragons can fly, have advanced magic capabilities and some subspecies can shoot lightning.Β I am not sure if any can breathe fire, I haven't decided yet.Β And I would imagine they could make hybrid offspring with similar serpentine-like lizards, like quetzalcoatls and ampitheres.Β Which both are basically giant winged (feathered) snakes.Β The hybrids would look like Eastern dragons with feathery wings, although the wings are purely cosmetic and don't actually assist with flying (which is totally ok since their Eastern part grants them flying anyway!)

Oh are basilisks effected by their gaze or the gaze of another basilisk?

Basilisks are not affected by the gaze of other basilisks (since that would make breeding impossible) BUT basilisks can be killed if they see their own eyes in a reflection.

What non-human could form a hybrid with a basilisk, and what class would they be?

Here's an interesting thing!Β While some closely related species can produce hybrids (fauns and satyrs, dragons and drakes, amphitheres and quetzlcoatls, etc,) basilisk do not have any close relatives they can reproduce with to create viable offspring.Β Basilisks have a difficult enough time reproducing among themselves; many females die during pregnancy (is that the right term for reptiles?) and nearly half of all hatchlings die in their first few months.Β So basilisk-hybrids do not exist.Β

IN your universe what is the difference between a dragon and a drake?

Drakes are wingless (western style) dragons and they normally cannot breathe fire.

So what class would a drake be?
And can you tell me what a dragon/drake or drake/dragon hybrid would look like, and what class would it be? Does it matter who is the mom or dad?

Drakes are usually Class 3, because they can't breathe fire or fly.Β And the hybrids would look like dragons, but have limited flying capabilities since their wings are much smaller.Β Dragons are usually bigger than drakes, so a hybrid would be an in-between size of the two species.Β If you saw a hybrid by itself without a reference to a true dragon you could very well mistaken a drake hybrid for a pure dragon.Β
And no, it doesn't matter if the father or mother is a dragon, hybrids usually look roughly the same.

I'd love to read this book when it comes out! <3 I thought dragons would be an automatic class 5 due to the magic levels but then realized you used the classes based on lethality to humans. Dragons don't have that automatic lethality to humans like the gorgons and basilisk do so I don't blame you for keeping the dragons at class 4 instead. :3 Yay! Are there male sphinxes in your world like Androsphinx, or the Egyptian one? WhereΒ are tengus and kitsune placed, if you have them? What about Thunder Bird, is he a totem or not? Just curious.

Yep, all the creatures you listed do exist in the Delphi universe!Β Tengus and kitsunes are pretty powerful critters, so they're probably class 3 or 4, leaning more towards 4.Β And thunder birds are a separate race from totems, and they'd probably be a class 3!

-Chimeras are a class 3 and are a legitimate race of monsters with lion heads and bodies, goat horns and rear legs, and serpentine tails.
-Taniwha, sure why not XD
-Rocs, harpies, quetzalcoatl, pterripi, and splintercats exist.Β Wraiths and banshees (and other ghost-like creatures) do not exist.Β Undead beings are non-existent with the exception of vampires.Β And dhampirs would not exist, even if Xareish was interested in having kids!Β
-Giants, trolls, gnomes, and other human-esque monsters do not exist.Β They were simply created in folklore and mythology in an attempt to vilify non-human sympathizers, saying humans who befriended the monster races were lesser than human.
I'm probably going to have to make a bestiary one of these days XD

Most likely the vampire.Β Vampires aren't affected by the deadly gaze because they are already dead, so the basilisks lose their number 1 advantage.

They have a bit of magic, but it's not particularly strong.Β It ranges from species to species, but they tend to use magic as much or as little as they want.Β

It kinda sucks that the system is almost racist. If you happen to be born a Class 5 but behave more like a Class 1 in temperament, you are forever being treated as a criminal. I also understand being cautious but this can get ridiculous for obvious reasons.

I'm thinking up a story in which there are non-humans (inspired very much by Delphi High), but the classification is by power, not magical abilities. And it's from 1-12, not 1-6. Dragons are classified at a Class 12.

This is a really neat system, and now it's got me wondering. What catagory would creatures like kitsune, chupacabras and kelpies go under?

Chupacabras and kelpies would probably be class 3's despite their notorious murderous reputations.Β Kitsunes would most likely be class 4's because of their strong magical prowess.
