Description
Zoe and Maggie came upon the city after what felt like an eternity in darkness. The silent buildings were alight with signs and displays as well as lights from their interiors.”I think this is it.” Maggie said, finally releasing Zoe. The two swam into the maze of concrete and steel that formed the sunken city. It was an eerie place, very few if any creatures swam between the buildings, and despite the dazzling lights, there was a distressingly somber feeling that enveloped the environment. Neither Maggie nor Zoe could quite put their finger on why they felt this way, but the feeling was like some memory lost to time.
”This feels wrong, I- I don’t want to go any further.” Zoe finally said, stopping in the water.
”Zoe, come on we are so close!” Maggie begged.
”No, you are close, to whatever it is you think you need. Maggie please, let’s go back.” Zoe begged back.
“I think it’s obvious what we need, a way to free the Twins, and with that magic symbol on the sign we need some kind of magic to make sure that thing doesn’t come out of the stop sign,” Maggie paused for a moment, realizing just how crazy of a quest she was on, “Man, I sound like a lunatic…”
”No, that’s not it, you said it before when that thing attacked us, you were looking for answers for something.” Zoe corrected.
”… I guess I did say that.” Maggie said as she looked at her bottle.
”Does that have anything to do with it?” Zoe asked, pointing at the bottle.
”I- it’s a lot I don’t know, all I know is that this bottle has, er, holds a… personal thing, I think.” Maggie stumbled over her words trying to explain the bottle that even she didn’t fully understand the significance of.
“What’s inside it, Maggie?” asked Zoe sternly.
”I- well it’s me I think, but-“ Maggie tried to explain as best she could but was cut off by Zoe, who had noticed that one of the towers that surrounded them was listening in.
”Hold on, we’ve got an audience!” Zoe said quietly.
“A what now?” Maggie was confused, but quickly followed Zoe’s gaze up to the titanic mermaid that loomed over them.
”Don’t… mind… me…” Slowly spoke the mermaid, her expression in an unwavering grin. She was an abstraction to say the least. A giant frame sitting atop a pillar of loosely bound cells. Strands of her stuck out like spokes from the strange mass that resembled hair. She did not make a move to get closer to Maggie and Zoe as the two started to back away.
“You… bring… light…?” She asked joyfully.
”It- wasn’t us.” Maggie tried to explain.
“But… you… came… when lights…” The giant sponge maiden said, gesturing to the illuminated world around her.
”I… never… knew…” she finished.
”Maggie, let’s go, we need to talk about all this.” Zoe said.
”I, yeah, let’s go, I don’t think I can take any more strangeness right now.” Maggie replied, and the two left the giant by her lonesome. But she was not disparaged by their departure.
”The… lights!” She bellowed, standing proud in the artificial glow. Something about it amused her in a way Maggie and Zoe couldn’t comprehend. They treated the outburst as a sign to leave, and so they darted out of the open streets, ducking into one of the ruined buildings.
(Quick Note, the sponge mermaid in the back there is based off the carnivorous sponge Asbestopluma hypogea. Now you know)
