Description
I did better with hair in my last portrait and worse with it on this one. I'm regressing. I don't understand how it can be so hard to make realistic hair. UghhgefejwoijfeweAnyway, i got so tired of it I just left it. I've been working on his hair and beard for a couple days now. I just need to draw bald people. I would be good at bald people.
So, Dominic Monaghan, from Lost, Lord of the Rings, Flash Forward and so on.

I'll admit, I had to look this guy up, and found that Merry is quite hard to recognize without all that squiggly hair and with that beard.
I'd say you did a fine job on the beard; I don't see any problems with it.
Four things that could be improved, though:
- It does look like the left cleft of the chin is a bit flat, unless he really does have an uneven chin.
- The nose also seems uneven and crooked: shorter on the left side than the right.
- The lips seem to have two unequal sides; the right side is shorter than the left. This may be perspective, expression, mistake, or a combination of those.
- And, of course, the hair. Perhaps you could: a) use the eraser to lightly shave off the singular strands to make them thinner and/or b) start your project at twice the size it should be to get the hair as thin as possible, then cut the resolution in half.
Things I like:
- The shading is awesome. It's not photorealistic, but I do like the artistic quality of it. It is still shaded in the right spots while not 100% smooth to keep the artistic aspect of it.
- The eyes are awesome. They are shiny and realistic looking, with the whites not being #FFFFFF white and the irises having that lovely pattern. You have done an excellent job on the eyes.
Overall . . . you have incorporated awesomity, Jess.

This is why I love you Ken. You give me a critique that doesn't, A) Make me feel like crap or B) Make me feel like you are just trying to flatter me. My mother is the A version and all my friends are the B. It's a nice mesh you have.
I'm glad the beard turned out well, it took so long and it wasn't something i could easily manipulate once I had it down.
The chin is uneven, nice catch, but the left part is actually how both sides are suppose to be, not the right. I must have screwed that up when i was going over the neck, which i always tend to leave for last.
The lips were fine but a bit large until I liquefied them in photoshop. When I did this is messed up the nose... but i have my limits on patience and i decided to just leave it, ahaha.
Now I didn't think about cutting the resolution.. thats a good idea, i might have to try that next time!
Another mistake is the eyebrows actually, they are suppose to be much more bushier. Haha, a joke of my friends and I is that i take stars and make them prettier then they are suppose to be..
Haha, thanks mucho! My next project is going to be Jake Gyllenhaal and i'll be playing around with more cooler colors. He has a beard too so i'm not looking forward to it, but practice makes perfect!

I am glad to know I am helpful.
I didn't notice anything with the eyebrows because they look well done on their own right. You've used your artistic license to make them less bushier, and you did it well because I would not have noticed without the photo reference.
*looks up Jake Gyllenhaal*
My, he does have a nice beard that you should have good practice with. He grew it enough that I didn't recognize him as the Bubble Boy at first!
One thing I learned in Drawing Techniques II was to draw hair from sculpture, since sculptures do a great job of identifying groups of locks of hair, which leads into drawing real hair well.
This is probably not as applicable to short beards and scruff, but it is a good concept to learn when doing smooth hair types. Just something I thought I would share.
Anywho, make it a point to have fun with your next beard; if you have fun, you will be more driven to learn.

Wow! Amazing work! The b/w was realistic enough, but you got the color perfectly?

Looking pretty awesome! : )
A tip for hair: Try painting it in as a solid shape first, then adding less of the individual hairs for texture. A little less realistic than what you're going for, but a good example: [link]

Ahaha, I do. I started with solid shapes and then went over it with individual hairs.
thanks though!
