Earth’s orbital sensors picked up the small craft the instant it dropped out of U-space. Automatic systems triggered an alarm relay that brought the Global Defense Center to full alert and the AI-controlled weapons systems online. Even as the base commander left his office, the ring stations around the planet were launching maximum load missiles at the ship.
By the time he was halfway down the corridor, running alongside the other personnel heading for the control center, the stations followed up with concentrated beam weapons. The commander smashed open the door as the missiles detonated harmlessly against the ship’s hitherto invisible shields. Less than a second later, the beams hit the same surface and the energy dissipated harmlessly across the void.
The commander had just reached his station when something erupted from the ship; something that immediately exploded into a dense cloud of several hundred warheads. This cloud spread instantly across the orbital ring, detonating every defense station almost instantaneously. The center crew could only stand, mouths agape, as a single ship wiped out Earth’s entire defense network.
The commander turned to one of the technicians hammering at his console. ‘Readings on that thing?’
‘Technology signature seems to be Jasharii, sir.’ The commander nodded grimly; there had been fear of a Jasharii invasion ever since Earth had first come into contact with the highly advanced civilization. He dragged his attention from the craft hanging ominously in space back to the technician as the man spoke again.
‘It’s strange… the readings are only showing one life-form aboard.’ The commander frowned. What kind of people sent a single agent to conquer a planet? His frown deepened as he reflected that the single agent in question had just carved through everything that Earth had. Some of his questions were answered as the main screen flickered with a communication signal and the outside view of the ship was replaced with the altogether more appealing visage of the Princess Xalia.
The youngest daughter of the Jasharii emperor smiled sweetly as she looked at the shocked GDC crew. ‘So sorry to disturb you,’ she mocked in her delightfully low, husky voice.
It was typical of the vain princess to have eschewed the regulation Jasharii flight suit for a rubbery golden outfit that clung tightly and deliciously to every wondrous curve of her perfect young body. She was dripping with jewelry, including sparkling earrings and bracelets. The glimmering, self powered necklaces around her slender neck only served to draw attention to the magnificent cleavage that strained against her suit like two enormous gilded orbs.
Her long dark hair was exquisitely styled into a series of gentle curls and sweeping cascades, intertwined with the magnificent headdress loaded with yet more gemstones. Her lovely face was immaculately made up, gently darkening eye shadow emphasizing her glittering emerald eyes and her soft, gently pouting lips coloured a warm pink.
The commander managed with some difficulty to drag his attention away from the imperious beauty before him and back to the job at hand. ‘What is the meaning of this unprovoked attack? The treaties between Earth and Jasharii clearly prohibit such unannounced acts of aggression.’
‘Oh, shush,’ the princess purred. ‘Don’t be such a bore, commander. We’ve let you poor primitives stumble along for more than long enough. I have managed to destroy all your defenses with this one ship; things will go more smoothly if you just sit back and accept it.’
‘What do you want?’ the commander growled.
‘Oh, nothing much. Just Earth’s total surrender.’
‘You’re crazy.’
‘This ship carries enough anti-planetary weaponry to reduce your little ball of mud to ash. You have nothing with which to attack this ship. You have two hours, and then I fire. Until then, b’bye!’
The image of the lovely princess blanked out. Over the roar of panicked conversation in the center, the commander sank back down into his chair. Argument was futile; he knew Xalia was right. He didn’t relish telling that fact to the GDC command.
