I know exactly what you mean, it's so easy to get stuck in a 'if it ain't broke don't fix it' mentality, especially when you've got an established style you've worked on and built up, it comes so easily. Problem that causes for me is that when I try something new and it doesn't flow as easily I'm very quick to get frustrated with it, I find new stuff takes a lot of perseverance.
So good luck with you experiments, I always look forward to seeing your new pieces what ever the style.
