Yes, the novel itself might have not been all that erotic (at least according to nowadays standards; not strange given the time it was written it) but it did manage to capture the feeling you described as "dark intimacy". But I don't mind, personally I prefer this kind of writing to "actual" erotica. Yet I still felt the ending lacked something, so I tried to capture what was in my imagination
