Gay used to mean happy or joyus, but the homosexual community took it. It seems like they are trying to do the same thing to rainbows.

Like, it is so annoying when people assume that something that has a rainbow on it has a pro-gay message on it. I love rainbows, they are beautiful and exciting, were invented by God, and are a token of a covenant we have with him (Genesis 9).
This is still one of my favorite stamps.

My teacher asked me if all the rainbow stuff I have on my school laptop had anything to do with my sexual orientation, but I explained to her that I loved rainbows, but that I support their rights as well.
I've never looked at myself as anything but straight, until a few years ago that is. I didn't fall in love with rainbows because they represented same-sex relationships, but because they are a magnificent part of nature!
However -> Gay or not - it doesn't matter at all What is important is that you love yourself, and love whoever you may fall for, as long as it feels right for you!! ^^
I can sort of say that my love for rainbows grew even stronger when I found out it is their Pride Flag

I don't understand why rainbows represent same-sex relationships anyway. I guess I'm really technical and logical when it comes to things like this. Rainbows should represent the colors of the human race, not their sexual preference. They should do something with Yin-Yang, if that's the case.

Reference it to how the U.S. uses an Eagle; but the Eagle 'does not belong to them' as other countries use them as well.

But don't you think of the U.S. of A. when you see or hear about an eagle?
Then what other countries use the eagle. What other places (besides in mythology) use the rainbow?

No I don't think about the U.S. ever lmao;Β especially not when I see an Eagle.
and Ohh I dunno; THE RAINBOW uses the rainbow. There are thousands of companies that also use rainbows or the word rainbow. There's also birds named after Rainbows.

May I assume that you are not from the U.S? Well that's good, because I've met a few people who do. It's kinda ridiculous when one associates an image with one country, organization, etc. and not think of others out there. I apologize if I came off sounding like I associated the rainbow solely with the LGBT organization, and I'm sure there are tons of others out there who use rainbows for one thing or another (I like mythology way to much not to know the meaning of the rainbow for them), but when many people, and even the internet itself, associates it with one thing or another, it gets rather annoying.
π: 0 β©: 1
FrogPointPrince In reply to Aurora-Mandeville [2013-08-30 01:38:52 +0000 UTC]
Correct; I'm not from the U.S. Though I do agree the constant association that certain people make; most often people in or associated with LGBT can get annoying; I feel that things mean different to each; even two people who associate it with LGBT may not necessarily see it in the same light, etc. I don't condemn them for using the rainbow though as it does make sense to their cause of equality; but I'd rather it be used for a group of pure equality; not of 'sexual' equality. I think that's the point we should be making within the world; we need to protest all injustice not just an injustice to certain groups because until it's all solved none of it is solved.

They don't represent same-sex relationships; rainbows are rainbows. However the LGBT community has come to use it on their flag's to promote equality for 'all the colours of the rainbow'. As in 'be who you are and accept all who aren't you because they're just as much a part of the rainbow as you are'.

That's the thing, why did they choose a rainbow in the first place? It would make more sense that the rainbow is used to represent the different cultures of the world rather than sexual preference. Many shades of color, many cultures, but only three/four sexual preferences.

It can be like said; "I think they use rainbows because rainbows are often signs of happiness, and the word "gay" can mean happy."
I also found this explanation of Yahoo! from James B:
[link]
"The rainbow is a symbol of differences. It is something that shows that certain things or people can be different and love each other.
For instance, each of the colors of the rainbow are different, and they're just colors by themselves. But when they are displayed together, it shows how they can be each different, and still work together.
Gays/Lesbians use the rainbow for this reason. To symbolize that different people (including those that love differently like homosexuals) are not the problem, and that we need our differences to make the world beautiful.
If we were all the same, it would be like seeing only one color in the rainbow. How exciting would that be? Since we are different, it's like an array of colors. That's what makes the world seem beautiful!
I hope this makes sense, but i cannot explain it any clearer.
By the way:
Red = Light
Orange = Healing
Yellow = Sun
Green = Calmness
Blue = Art
Lilac = Spirit
Black (Shown only sometimes) = Triumph over AIDS/STDS"
I hope this cleared it up for you

Uh, no . . . the word gay meant 'happy/merry' long before it was used to mean same-sex couples (and it was used as a girl's name!). Also, the only kinds of love I have heard about are the love for friends, the love for family, the love for one's spouse, the love for country, and the love for God. The colors of the rainbow could represent those different kinds of love, especially since they all deal with being happy (though you still have to work at it).
One more thing, if rainbows do represent differences, then why is it the LGBT is the only organization to use it as its symbol? What about all the other organizations that deal with differences (i.e. United Nations)? Rainbows don't belong just to the LGBT, they belong to everybody as a reminder that we can work together and get along even with our differences. If we weren't different, this would be a very boring world.
P.S. What does the meaning of the colors have to do with anything? Those meanings sound like something for the whole world, not just the LGBT. And the world doesn't seem beautiful because of all the color, it is beautiful because of all the color! It's just that one group doesn't have the right to claim that all for themselves. Also, what about White, Gray, and Brown? White is the presence of all color and Black is the absence of all color.

I know the word gay meant happy before it was used to refer to gay and lgbtq people, but if you didn't know, it has long had it's secondary connotation of sexualΒ licentiousness.
By 1955, the word 'gay' had a acquired the meaning it has today, but it's most likely believed that gay and lgbtq people used the term 'gay' between themselves long before that.
The Rainbow flag has been a symbol for gay and lgbtq people since the 70's, as its colours reflect the diversity of their community. The original flag had 8 colours, and the colours then meant;
Pink: Sexuality
Red: Life
Orange: Healing
Yellow: Sunlight
Green: Nature
Β Β Turquoise: Magic/art
Indigo/blue: Serenity/harmony
Β Β Violet: Spirit
Now the flag only consists of 6 colours; Red, orange, yellow, green, blue and violet.
Let me remind you that the rainbow itself doesn't belong to anyone. It is their Rainbow flag that represents them.Β It belongs to them because of the wonderful artist, Gilbert Baker, that designed their flag in the first place.
A rainbow is as natural as all members of an lgbtq community is. It's nothing unnatural about being lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered or queer/questioning, as many people still think. (Being gay was something that used to mean you had a mental illness. It wasn't until the 70's that being gay was considered a normal variation of sexual orientation. Of course there are still people with the belief that they have a mental illness).
Why would United Nations use a rainbow to represent them? They have a wonderful logo that represent them aready, which literally is united nations - Their logo has all nations united. It would be weird to me if they had a rainbow flag to represent themselves, as it wouldn't make much of sense when it's about uniting nations.
It makes sense to me why the Rainbow flag belongs to the lgbtq community, due to what I explained earlier on; it represents the diversity in their community.
We all should know that we don't need a reminder to know that there's nothing wrong with being different. If you trust yourself enough, you'll be able to stand tall as the person you are. There's nothing wrong about being different at all.
The things that the colours represent is something beautiful to me, and I'd say it is beautiful to anyone belonging to the lgbtq communtiy.
Also, do you have any idea how hard they all fought to get the rights they have today? They don't even have all the human rights, and they are still struggling to be treated equal as straight people. Do I need to actually remind you about how horrible people were to lgbtq people back in the days? They have their flag as a symbol they know are theirs. It is something beautiful, it is something they all can seek comfort in. They used their Rainbow flag as a symbol of gay pride in their marches, when they fought for their rights.
Now as you brought up the other colours, I can tell you that the Rainbow flag might have originated from college campuses during the 60's. Some people demonstrated for world peace. They carried a Flag of the Races/Flag of the Human Races. The colours on that flag consisted of Red, black, brown, yellow and white.
I honestly can't see why it is so difficult for you to see that the Rainbow flag represents the lgbtq community - A rainbow itself doesn't.

Which makes it all the more harder, I think, on women nick/named Gay. Could be just as hard for the guys named Guy.
You're right on that, the rainbow itself doesn't represent the LGBT group, many mythologies from around the world have stories about the rainbow and what it meant to them. However, according to iFellDownARabbitHole, he/she has been approached about that very thing, hence this post. Apparently there are people who associate the rainbow with the LGBT community solely because of their rainbow flag, and those of us who adore the rainbow for its beauty, its various meanings, and the stories it generates can't go around showing our appreciation and enjoyment of a work of nature without someone thinking we represent the LGBT community.
Rainbows follow the yin-yang concept for they are created by light/fire and dark/water. When those opposites attract each other, a rainbow is born.
I apologize, I was referring to the diversity of cultures and nations being represented by the rainbow for the United Nations. The diversity of the people, of all living things in the world, is so beautiful that it would be a disaster if all the diversity went away.
