I see what you mean. But no, none of this is photoshopped....well, except for the colors, those are obviously photoshopped. (To be honest, I would have toned the colors down a bit if I did this today. The photo editor I am today is not the same editor I was 2-3 years ago.)
Back on topic. All octopi are as is, meaning they were placed on her body and face deliberately. If i remember my lighting, it was a mixture of diffused ambient sunlight and flash bounced off a white poster board at an non-contrasty angle above her face. (she was laying on the ground). I believe this gives the impression of soft, flat lighting, thus no harsh shadows from octopi whose tentacles are too small to create much shadow anyway.
