I was thinking more like the energy ball imploding as a type of drive... in some sort of a nuclear imploding reaction.

Yeah,very much like that. There was also a star treck movie featuring something similar, (i think) . They artificially created a small black hole to use ot wor bending time and space and take the ship with them practically anywhere beyond light speed. Or something like that....
