I remember when I was very young, sitting on an old couch at my grandparent’s home on New Year’s Eve. I was hardly able to stay awake and I could just barely make out a figure across the room. My grandmother was playing on the piano, and I couldn’t understand how somebody could make such music. Her fingers were wisps that seemed to move independently from her body.

Music is the discipline that binds us, combining the melody of song with the algorithms and patterns of math with the science of chemistry in our brains to give us a euphoric experience, if just for a little while.

Decades later I sit on my bed after New Year’s and try and mimic what I once witnessed as a child. Here is the picture of a young man trying to mimic his grandmother.
