Description
Heat D, the Death Heat. Six returning teams in this heat, and widely considered to be the most competitive heat of the series. This heat sees the return of Storm2, Series 7 runner-up and Third World Champion, twice Annihilator Champion Kan-Opener, Sabretooth, whose predecessor was forced to withdraw from Series 7 as it's flywheel was too powerful, and Terror Turtle, along with PP3D, a robot built by the driver of Series 7 winner Typhoon, one of the most successful robots on the UK live circuit, Eruption, and Apollo, a robot that owes a lot to a Robot Wars veteran.Battle 1:
Eruption - A robot with a powerful flipper, which the team claim is the most powerful in the competition. For the series, the team added a gripper to the robot, giving it a rare combination of weapons, but the team are worried about their ability to aim the flipper.
Sabretooth - This new version of Sabretooth is armed with three weapons; on one side is a 22kg 4500rpm drum spinner, and on the other side is a movable gripper and flipper. It is also untested, so the team don't know how well the composite plastic and hardened steel armour will stand up.
Terror Turtle - Now two robots: the main robot Terror Turtle and a smaller wedgebot, The Hatchling. Terror Turtle itself has a 9kg 3000rpm flywheel, whilst The Hatchling has no weapons of it's own. The robot has a wooden frame, as the team thought it would be better for its ability not to transmit shock to its interior workings, but this could be a problem, especially with it's thin armour.
Storm2 - Now armed with a range of interchangeable weapons, including a vertical spinner, a forward firing flipper, and its traditional lifting bar, Storm2 is one of the most expensive robots in the competition, with a real-time telemetry system to help the team decide what to do next, and analyse the robot’s performance after a fight on a PC in the pits. It's top speed has been reduced from 23mph to 18mph for greater control, but the motors have been known to overheat in testing.
Battle 2:
Apollo - Built by Team MAD, Apollo is the successor of Chronic, from the 2015 BattleBots season, the latest incarnation of Kronic the Wedgehog. Apollo has a high-power flipper and a low ground clearance, the width of a pound coin, but if the tip of the flipper gets bent then it could affect maneuverability.
Kan-Opener - The most powerful crusher in the competition, Kan-Opener J-Spec has 12 tonnes of force in its crushing jaws. The robot is invertible, but the team still worries about its high ground clearance, and its vulnerability to flippers.
PP3D - Full name Parts Printed in 3D, PP3D is an undercutter with a 31kg spinner. Built by Gary Cairns of the Typhoon team, the robot gets its name from its use of 3D printed parts. The team worries about the disc, as it's thin in some areas, and if it breaks, they don't have a spare.
Sweeney Todd - A fully invertible robot with two angle grinders, Sweeney Todd is the only robot in the competition to use Mecanum wheels, allowing it to move in any direction. It's also 65kg underweight, and the team's first attempt at building a fighting robot.
