Description
A quick, very messy guide that I hope is helpful anyway! Those of you who know a lot about kimono will notice I glossed over a few things, but this is meant as an overview of the most common mistakes I see artists making when drawing people in kimono/geisha/etc. Cosplayers might find it handy too. Feel free to share your own kimono art or ask questions, and I'll help if I can.
Also! If you like kimono/traditional Japanese things, please check out my blog:

EDIT: Wow! O_O I had no idea people would like this tutorial this much. Thank you very much to everyone who has favorited it!
EDIT 2: NEW TUTORIAL! If you liked this one, please check out
"Tutorial: Real or Fake Kimono". (Only #1 is repeated information from this tutorial, but I figured it was important.)

It's very good ^^ But the musubi you've shown as wrong, is actually very simmilar to a real one, called yanagi (worn by geisha of some cities)

Thanks for your input, but I'll have to politely disagree that the wrong knot shown is close enough to the yanagi to confuse people. The yanagi still folds up and is a closed loop. The picture I drew is one flap hanging out and loose and I actually drew it that way for that specific reason (because I see it drawn a lot that way and I didn't want to draw the yanagi, a real knot).

i just wanted to inquire, is there a difference between the collar of a female kimono and the collar of a male kimono?
π: 0 β©: 1
iheartsendai In reply to 7sheryl7 [2013-03-26 13:06:11 +0000 UTC]
If you mean placement (how sharp of a V it forms in the front when you dress yourself) then men are like adult women setting with a sharp V showing a lot of collar for casual occasions. For younger women and/or formal occasions, you show less collar and younger women wear a wider, higher and more concealing V.
If you mean construction, there is no real difference in the total shape and width of the fabric. Some women's are sewn over in half, while others are open to their full width and you have to fold it in half while dressing. I think men's are always sewn over for convenience. Anyway, a collar will always be folded in half though, at the end of dressing, whether it's sewn or folded.
And if that doesn't make any sense let me know and I'll dig up some pictures.

Your guides are so helpful! I was about to draw a japanese woman in kimono, but decided to find a reference first... instead I found this guide and realized that I was about to draw a kimono VERY wrong. Thanks!

Thank you! I've started to see it when some Japanese are dealing with foreign people, so maybe some are starting to do it because the foreign people expect it?

Nice tutorial!
It really covers very common mistakes (if only I won 1 cent for each wrong-crossed kimono collar I've seen drawn around, I guess I'd be seriously rich by now... X/ ).
I like the simple comparation drawings, and it's really helpfull for anyone who's starting to like/draw kimono. ^^
Also, if I could make a suggestion... there's another big mistake I see a lot - people drawing the kimono sleeve coming from the shoulder's hight (like a suit?). If you ever feel like doing another of those tutorials, you could cover this detail.

weird question, but what kind of floqwers are typically on a bira bira?
π: 0 β©: 1
iheartsendai In reply to midsneypixels [2012-09-18 23:28:19 +0000 UTC]
Very astute question, actually, because it does matter what flower you use. Traditionally they follow the seasons, so a bira-bira worn in November might feature red maple leaves, and one for May might feature irises.
Some examples of seasonal motifs:
[link]
As a note, bira-bira worn by maiko (apprentice geisha) are often just the metal fan with dangling metal chimes worn by themselves, with seasonal flower kanzashi worn elsewhere on the head. For young normal women, and occasionally maiko, you can see the flowers and chimes combined, as I drew them.
Maiko with their bira-bira separate:
