Description
Some more expression studies. Alicorn faces are surprisingly hard.To be clear, these are all drawn from screenshots of the show, for practice purposes.Β
Also, it's pretty fun

I'm really loving these! Good way to practice proportion and emotion!
Perhaps I should doing some sketches too

It's always a good idea
Also, try to expand your comfort zone to something you don't usually do - for example, for me old ponies are super hard to draw.

I'll be sure to give it a shot!
I really need to work on pony poses.
It's something I rarely do considering I do more portraits than anything else.

Then the best bet would be to search for screenshots of ponies doing other stuff than standing. I use the MLP wikia for that, as they have galleries for each and every episode that has been aired so far. I keep building larger and larger reference libraries by downloading some of those pictures to my pc. I also download other peoples work, not to copycat, but for inspiration. If you do that, you should think about folders, as that makes finding what you're looking for so very much easer. Especially when you have built a large image library.

Yeah, it sounds like a great idea what you've got going on already.
Better to practice and become fluid with drawing poses before going
on with an original pose.
I've actually built a library of reference images on my desktop a while
ago,Β but it's mostly of faces. Time to start updating!

Heh, yep! Also subfoldering can be a tremendous help (Iseriously need to subfolder my expressions folder).
I also have basic reference folders for ponies, such as the mane six, princesses etc. It helps to have clear, good pictures of a certain pony from different angles. I admit, I mostly need them when customizing, and that means I need the full circle (front to back)

I think it would be best to separate by expressions, and then
by the character. Sometimes, you're just looking for theΒ
specific expression, but then not all eyes are of the same shape.
I'm not too sure on how to sort by poses. Just by characters?
Yeah, all the references are effectively, building a 3-D model
to help you visualize the shape and form. Heck, I've actuallyΒ
thought of downloading a SFM model to help, but then it isn't
exactly accurate.Β

The problem with those models, and the show screenshots, is that especially the position, and sometimes even shape, of tails and manes varies depending on angle. Best example of this is perhaps Rarity's front mane.
I've yet to sort my poses into subfolders, but I think I will put flying poses into their own folder for easy access. For others, I'll probably go for how much motion they have, and what kind. Meaning, walking poses go into their own respective folder, and jumps go to their own, and so forth. It is also a good idea to try and find full walk, trot and run cycles.

Yeah, the hair always seems to flip sides depending on the angle. I seem to have trouble sorting emotions. Theres far too many to create folders for each one!
Ohh i've looked at some of Argodarmon's walk cycles, and theyre great models for anlyzing the walking pattern.

Not only that, but Rarity's hair from the "other side" looks kinda wonky, and loses a part that show up in the "normal" angle.
That is something I've been struggling with too. I guess I'm going for emotion strength, so I can look for the appropriate strength of emotion. Or make "basic" expression folders and a "special" ones. No idea so far -__-

Ahh I see what you mean now. It seems to also lose volume as compared to the normal angle.
Yeah, theres so many expressions (I love how they make so many) but it makes it so hard to sort. Theyre all very unique! Woah i like your sorting method. Strength of emotion! Very creative and ingenius method (:

Especially Rarity is hard to custom (I make the manes and other bits with clay), as I need to take every angle into consideration and make a happy in-between. Also, it's even Β worse trying to make that mane into a plushie!
Thank you ^^ It was a spur of the moment I guess I'd still create a specials folder too.Β

I've actually never tried moulding clay, but I can say, it looks mighty hard to get details down. I also find that Rarity plushies either have really well done manes, or poorly done ones. If only we had MLP:FiM ponies in real life!
No, thank you for the idea! I love it! Yeah a specials folder for your favourite expressions would be lovely :3
