Absolutely loved it!
Just one suggerence: Some comics are too detailed or use tiny fonts in dialogues, so a zoom option for readers could be nice

If you look in the top right corner of the motion-book area there is a full-screen button which will make the book larger and easier to read.

One question- is it possible to sell your creations on the iOS App Store like an interactive ebook? Or can they only be sold via the Madefire mobile app?

Question: Is it okay to create fan-comics using Motion Books; does the Motion Books have to be original?

You can create whatever you like, it's up to you. This is just a tool, and it's really only limited by the imagination of the user.
Naturally not everybody will like it - not everybody likes comics, or what we're doing here. But you can certainly make original projects!Β
Oh, and the fat white thing is an open book, and also the 'm' for Madefire.
It's fun though. I love seeing what you can do with a story - it really changes the way you think about telling them.

i find motion comics weirdly distracting, unfortunately.
on reflection i think it's because the panels are always moving and reconfiguring themselves, and i always have to wait to see what to read next. It really takes me out of the flow when my peripheral vision can't figure out where to turn my eyes to, to read the next part, until i've read the current one. If the speech were static and the panel order was instantly obvious, i would probably enjoy parallax and animation and stuff a lot more, but as it is, having the textual and chronological structure of medium constantly changing is kinda disorienting and itΒ really takes me out of the story.

Hi sleepcircle - thanks for the response - we are certainly learning all the time as we use the tool at Madefire ourselves - and personally i agree that the important thing to remember is to 'serve the story' - and not get carried away too much with movement - it's great to have movement as a tool - but like any tool - it's how you use it. I'd love to know what you were reading so i can look at it with your comments in mind.Β
Also i'd appreciate your response to this book i've been working on - does this still take you out of the story? - we're learning - so please any and all feedback is really welcomed!
(loving seeing how deviants are using the tools already in so many different ways)Β
One more thing - these books can look great when you read them full screen (top right button) and i recommend headphones if possibleβ¦Β
Thanks again

Ah, I have one question which I cannot completely ascertain the answer of. Is there any way to include a looping piece of custom animation in a motion book, like a gif or swf loop?
π: 0 β©: 0
sleepcircle In reply to BenWolstenholme [2014-07-11 21:06:27 +0000 UTC]
Oh, I should ask--how is this whole ensemble run--is it flash?
I think it's a lot better, yeah--i can get into it now without feeling so much like i'm wrestling with the page, but something's distracting me still, and I can't quite place it. I'm sorry about being kinda picky btw u_u I know it's tough and not always rewarding to try and break ground like this on a large scale.
Also I checked the madefire tools and the sounds seem to be per page. I think that's mostly fine, but it seems to me that it might be better for music tracks to last longer than one page each.Β like imagine if this song here or whatever was a soundtrack for someone who has been shipwrecked waking up alone on a burned out, tarry beach.Β if you give the song like thirty seconds to a minute, you'll hear it slowly build to this sad, desolate atmosphere, with seagulls and the bells of distant buoys. but like, if this was a motion comic, we would've turned the page like 20 seconds in and the song would've dropped out again, you know?
Oh, a side note: in video editing, most cuts are made during moments of silence. However, when a loud sound plays there is a microsecond of mental confusion after which the brain re-establishes its perception of the scene. A cut made while the brain is still orienting itself will be just as seamless-feeling as a cut made in silence. It sounds bizarre but hiding a cut in the wake of a loud noise effectively 'tricks' the brain into not noticing the shot switch. (The disorienting nature of sudden, loud noises is also taken advantage of by editors of horror films.)
Maybe you could time your one-shot 'sting' sounds to be start a little before frame appearances, so that the brain re-adjusts into the newly appeared panel, instead of the brain grokking the panel, and then suddenly losing its grip again, upon the advent of a loud sound. On the OTHER hand I really have very little experience with the medium of motion comics, so this sort of call would ultimately be up to you to see if it felt right to you or not.
Anyway good luck with what you're doing here! I hope it works out.

40% sounds pretty high. But then I guess if you provide the tools, MLT & other things, I guess it's reasonable...for dA.
Good luck stopping people from making FA money from this. That sounds like a whole new ball of legal issues you'll have to deal with.

Will the motion books be paid in any currency we want or just points?

On dA they're purchased with points, which can then be withdrawn through paypal or whatever to your native currency. I'm not sure how it works on the app though, sorry!
