Making them is free, but I believe it costs real money to buy them.

Okay, a comparison of fees charged by other, similar services for publishing comics and literature in a digital format:
Comixology: 50% of NET sale (sale price less distribution costs and credit card fees), reasonable estimate of fees is therefore 60%+
Apple iBooks: 30%
Amazon Kindle: 30-65%
Kobo: 30-55%
Google Play: 48%
Barnes & Noble: 50%
Sony Reader Store: 50%
Do your research, people, and THEN complain that 40% is too high. Because looking at what other similar services charge, 40% looks pretty standard to me. The more you know...

Laughs at all people saying 40% is to much it really isn't I have tried to get published and what you ultimately need is an agent. The agent you pay fee up front then 20 percentΒ to agent on each sale then publisher gets 30 percent then another 10 to 15 percent goes to distributor per sale unless you are JK rolling or Ann m Martin or someone of equal calibre you are only reviving 10-15 percent of each sale. And take cost of time and investment into account you barely get a profit.Β You getting 60% is great.

40% is barely anything when you're publishing it yourself and getting cool effects and transitions to go with it. Your basically paying for the use of the program. I don't understand why people are complaining!

True that!
Unless, like a certain famous crime author, you have a large stable of desperate subordinate authors who write your entire book for you, with you tweaking each chapter slightly so you can say you 'collaborated', and then you publish the books with your name in massive letters and theirs in miniature ones, getting the lion's share of the proceeds, thereby pumping out many dozens of books a year, year after year, while hardly doing anything except being 'the name'.
Yet another case of 'exposure' being almost always a scam, in terms of doing unpaid or underpaid work for the supposed opportunities it offers.

Having mixed feelings about this, and questions that are likely already answered elsewhere. Signing off 40 percent of off profit seems like a lot to me: others tell me that that's a truly reasonable price, so I'm not sure anymore.Β
As an animator I am hoping that actual animation is allowed. As in, suppose a character walks, one could add 12 frames and turn it into a decent looking walk cycle instead of just hopping the head across the screen. That can give a huge lift in overal pleasant-to-look-at-ness of this deal.
Overall it sounds like a great idea nonetheless, especially considering that you don't HAVE to get in on the 60 and 40 percent thing, making them free to read for everyone seems like a great option to me.

MarcoEmma In reply to Xannijn [2014-07-10 12:01:32 +0000 UTC]
Hmmm... Adding your own animation would be cool, but I'm not sure it's possible... Yet. Maybe they'll update it and add it in later. By the way, did you animate your own icon? It's very well done.
Also, 40% is good. A lot of other companies will take more like 50-65%.
π: 0 β©: 2
Xannijn In reply to MarcoEmma [2014-07-10 13:38:53 +0000 UTC]
It would be a mighty cool update, though I could understand them not adding it. That's what we can upload movies for after all. Arguably animations could make the comics even cooler, but it does make the line between comic and film very thin.
And yes, I did, thank you! Β
It indeed is a lot better than taking the 50-50 cut

40% definitely is a reasonable rate. I posted this in another comment, but for your benefit, these are the rates charged by other platforms offering similar digital distribution for literature and comics:
Comixology: 50% of NET sale (sale price less distribution costs and credit card fees), reasonable estimate of fees is therefore 60%+
Apple iBooks: 30%
Amazon Kindle: 30-65%
Kobo: 30-55%
Google Play: 48%
Barnes & Noble: 50%
Sony Reader Store: 50%
π: 0 β©: 1
MarcoEmma In reply to KtrenalWinterheart [2014-07-10 12:13:14 +0000 UTC]
So iBooks, Kindle or Kobo could be better, but then you wouldn't get to use the motion book tool. I suppose that's part of the reason why it's 40%.
And if 60% isn't good for you, you can always look to get another job like commissions or working at some other place.

Come on peeps. 40% is less than the buttfucking you get via Comixology. Plus with Madefire you get your product elevated by their platform, run by a bunch of people who have clearly gone ALL IN on this product and NEED to make it a success. Make a good motion comic, get it out there sharpish, I bet they'll promote the shit out of it and you'll make money.

Hi MonochromeGoggles - yes you're right we've had a really limited group beta testing the tool for some months to make sure it was ready for launch - and that represents some of the new creator material you mention. Also of course publishers have been using the tool - we wanted to make sure it was right for launch.Β
I don't know ghastlymcnasty - but he/she is right - i can assure you that we are 'all in' as a team at Madefire - and personally care about the tool and being respectful to creators and comics. For my part I set out to build Madefire with Liam and Eugene so that everyday creators could have the tools to make digital books - it does take time - but that's really the art part - the build is super quick in comparison β¦ anyway all this is to say we do care - and we use our own tools to make books so we can try and relate to other creators and what's neededΒ
Getting work 'found' is always the hardest part - we will do all we can to help and i know dA is the right place to find a supportive community and great feedback to grow as a storyteller and artist - that's the really special thing for me...
hope this helps and you'll consider giving it a try

Just one other question then. What's this about letting Madefire access and manage my sta.sh and DA page? I'm not sure if I'm comfortable with a third party getting involved in my personal account without knowing the full details about how much influence that Madefire will have over my intellectual property. If you have a more detailed TOS and EULA about what just what kind of freedom I'm granting Madefire to do to my account, I'd like to hear it before testing it out on this account of mine. Otherwise I feel that I'll need to make a seperate Deviantart account just to protect the rights to my own material.

Madefire is a publisher just like all the other publishers out there but they have Motion Comics as their platform for selling. Exactly the same deal applies to them as to any other publisher. Make a quality comic and they'll get behind it. It's understanding what can be defined as quality, is where our differences lie.
I wouldn't for a minute suggest that Madefire should push average/poor indie comics, of which there will be loads. There are no free rides in this industry. I'm saying make a top quality bad-ass comic that does use this feature to it's fullest and they'll put you on a pedestal and hail you the next king of comic book land. Madefire are looking for a hero to prove this tool works.

Hmm, I can see your point. Though I'm still skeptical of their commitment to the individual artist as far as advertising goes. If its in their best interest to publicize potentially successful stories, I'd like to know how they do it, and how quickly people get behind the notion of purchasing these motion books. The industry seems really hinged on using these things on mobile and desktop devices, but smartphone screens are really small and personal tablets can be rather slow at times.
Also, if this is essentially a 'beta' of the service, what do they have to lose in profits if they initially bundle the service at a lower price, then perhaps provide an even greater quality service with a higher percentage? Make it easier to access for the inexperienced to get a real feel of the thrill of publishing for profit. It's better for both sides that way, because freelancers who learn the quickest will be more successful in creating high-quality and less likely to quit, while the company will eventually end up with experienced and motivated clients. Naturally they'll want access to more features, so they'd be happy to pay the extra percentage. Heck, if they turn out to be successful, the company could always put in an EULA or TOS that they'll drop unsuccessful stories into the 'not for profit' section.

I think I definitely fit into your "average working class artist" MonochromeGoggles, and my experience so far is that the people at Madefire are absolute princess to work with. Helpful, patient, encouraging and visionary I can't give you actual numbers, but as everything in the art world, success or failure depend on a myriad facts. Let's just say the good people behind this tool offer you a huge short cut of a long and rough road.

Interesting, though I think I'll wait till they explain this business about having access to my Sta.sh and gallery management before I even test their product using my own material. Right now their TOS Β when trying to use it raises a few red flags that I want addressed first.

They don't have access to your Sta.sh, what they do is make your madefire and deviant account compatible so you can upload from MF to DA. (Sorry, what is TOS?)

Ahh, I see. That's a much better explanation. I had figured it was something along those lines, but I wanted to make absolutly sure.
And TOS is Terms Of Service. Its essentially the full list of expectations and guidelines of a service.

Don't worry. We take no ownership of anything at all. It remains your 100%. No hidden loopholes! If you read my journals you'll see the philosophy behind all this - I've been a freelance artist for 28 years and felt the sting many many times, so this has been entirely created to serve the creator. I hope this gives a better sense of our history and intention! And cheersΒ Derveniotis Β we love UGH!

Thank you very much for this reply! It's good to hear from a freelancer who knows their stuff and understands the worries for a budding artist, I'll take your advice to heart. It really does mean a lot to know that Madefire studios is keeping their hands clean when dealing with potential clients and comic artists who are aiming to take commercial publishing for a spin. Hopefully this fact will encourage new and seasoned comic artists alike to strive to use the Motionbook feature to it's full potential.
Once again, thank you for taking the time to answer my query. ^_^

My pleasure! It's understandable these days that people are wary. We have every reason to be! That's why we made this!
And thank you for asking the right questions but still keeping an open mind!Β

The idea is good, but this point should be reworked

Not really. Most other services charge 60%.

For those saying 40% seems a bit high for a fee for using this, bear in mind that when you publish an ebook through Apple, Amazon, Google Books or Barnes & Noble, you pay at least a 30% fee on each sale, and some of them can be as much as 65%. And this service is much more similar to publishing an ebook than it is to using Photoshop or... borrowing someone's icecream scoop. o.o It's still more money than you'd get if you went through a traditional publisher, where you're lucky to even get 10% of the sale price of your book, comic, whatever, assuming they will even publish your material at all.

The 40% is understandable to me, but I can understand too how it's a bit harder for some to understand given that at this point Madefire is still a hyped but professionally unproven platform unlike Amazon or the others you mention which have massive, proven, returning customer bases. I'm not dissing Madefire, I love the idea and I'm keen, but it's not yet an industry heavyweight and generally part of the price is based on the exposure you can get there and the opportunities.
Ditto about the hardcopy publishing, you can end up with mere cents from each book.
