In our continuous effort to improve the deviantART experience, we're publishing weekly Site Updates to keep members informed and to gather feedback. Below is a list of recent changes to the site, bug fixes, and feedback that was brought up by members in the last Site Update .


What's New


The New deviantART Mobile Site

One of the most common requests from the community has been to update deviantART's mobile site. By popular demand, we've released a brand new version of the mobile site! The site is officially supported in the default browsers for the iPhone and Android phones and tablets.


Instead of developing two separate versions of the site—a desktop version and a mobile version—we've formatted the desktop site to fit into a mobile browser. This allows the mobile site to offer many more features than the previous version did, and it also makes for a more smooth user experience. The end result is a seamless mobile site, and it looks a little like this:



  • You can Browse art, check your Message Center, reply to Notes, browse your friends' Profiles and Galleries, visit the Forums, view today's Daily Deviations and do almost everything else you can on the desktop version of the site!
  • The drop down menu usually located in the top left corner of the site can be accessed by tapping on the deviantART logo, allowing you to easily access familiar tools without complication. 


  • You can find wallpapers for your phone using the "Wallpaper" app available in the main menu!
  • The Message Center is located in one place, which makes responding to comments and browsing art and Journals a quick, easy experience. Deviants who enjoy viewing their Message Center one section at a time can tap on the arrow next to "Messages" at the top of the Message Center. This will prompt the Message Center's left sidebar to appear and allow selection one section of the Message Center to view at a time.
  • Journal Skin designers, if you'd like control how your skin looks in a mobile browser, learn how to use our new mobile media queries .

Prints Integration on Deviation Pages

We've implemented an easier way to purchase art on deviantART! When viewing a deviation that is enabled as a Print, you'll be met with a sleek new menu that is designed to be simple and straightforward.



We've moved the Prints functionality from its own separate page and placed it within the deviation page, to help artists sell more of their work, and to reduce friction for buyers looking to purchase art they love.



Because the functionality of the old Prints pages has been added to the deviation page, you can now preview how your Prints purchase will look without having to leave the deviation page! Once you select a product type, the preview will update to reflect your selection.


The New Submit Art Page (Beta Testers Only)

Beta Testers, we're bringing you a complete revamp of the Submit Art page! While the page you're familiar with has been a long-standing part of deviantART, the new page is designed to be more intuitive, user-friendly, and up to date with deviantART as it is today.

  • A bug related to missing thumbs and previews on drawings was identified. Fixed by sgrahamUK
Sta.sh
  • When changing the main file of an item originally uploaded through an app, the app attribution will now be cleared. Fixed by kouiskas
  • Non-Latin characters are now cleanly stripped from uploaded items' titles, as deviation titles still only support latin characters. Fixed by kouiskas
  • When going inside a stack, into an item, and then back to the stack, uploading a file inside the stack would put the file in Sta.sh instead of the stack. Fixed by kouiskas
Sta.sh Writer

  • Thumbnails of literature submitted through Sta.sh Writer appearing in stacks in the Message Center would have misaligned stack corners. Fixed by kemayo
  • Menus in Sta.sh Writer have been changed to be a little more responsive; you can now mouse from one to another without having to click. Fixed by kemayo
  • Classes are now allowed on span tags, for skinning purposes. Fixed by Alisey
  • Efficiency of fetching your Friends List in Sta.sh Writer's sidebar has been improved; less unnecessary data is pulled, and the menu builds faster. Fixed by kemayo and inazar

Thanks very much for the feedback left on last week's update ! Here's some of the feedback you left for us.

  • The most common response regarding the friends system was that deviants would like an easy way to separate lists of who they watch from lists of deviants who are their friends. Dramira-Official mentioned that this could also be applied to the Message Center, where new messages from friends could be listed before the general watch section.
  • lohkk and Yamitora1 suggested that an easy means of managing and organizing one's friendslist would be helpful, and ShapeShifter314 mentioned that being able to search through one's friends list would be useful as well.
  • Some deviants would like stacks within folders in their Message Center. Suggested by Krisoyo
  • A search function in Group galleries would be helpful. Suggested by IcyPheonix
  • Deviants would like notes sent to Groups to be included in their Sent Notes folder. Suggested by alexpeanut and Magical525
  • It would be helpful to be able to add keywords to Groups, so that they can be found more easily when searching in the Groups Portal . Suggested by MartinSilvertant
  • Some members would like to apply custom CSS to their Gallery's Featured folder. Suggested by Veroom

(Yes, I know it's time to get a new smartphone with a bigger screen, but I'm kinda strapped for cash now. Eventually, on the iPhone 5, I'm sure it'll be better, but for now, I hate the mobile site.)

While I appreciate user-friendliness, will all the old options still be available to customize? Can you please make the page a little bit darker like the rest of dA (and the current submit page) since some of us are sensitive to pure white light? Will there be more options available as well as a wider range of file-types that deviantART understands like TGA? I'd really like more options available for writing like indenting. Since devMuro is used for pictures, why not have a mini word processor for writers (with things like spell-check built in)?

Please, deviantArt i love you but quite frankly this isn't a 'smooth mobile interface.' It's basically cramming the entire desktop onto one screen, which is causing a decrease in speed for easy and simple use. Not to mention its glitching up most of the forums and updates I am trying to read, and i am unable to do almost anything on here without being at the speed of a turtle. Granted the old one was not as 'Complex' but it was easier and faster for me to use, but the new mobile has gone so far as to crash the safari system on my iPod because of the tedious constant loading. Do alot of us a favor and keep the old interface you had, and do more with that.

Like many others I haven't been able to do jack with the new interface, it's less easy and useful.

Same way my pixel art will forever be a fook up because they refuse to get rid of a stupid and USELESS pale background.

Due to the hidious size of the toenails ... I don't ever go to front page either. I used to love looking at the newest devations but now it's a chore to look through that mile long excuse of in your face mess. No thank you

I really like the new mobile version, I'm using it right now. on the old one I had to keep flipping from mobile to regular to see certain things, but i would like to stay on the mobile version because that loads faster on my iPod, so it would get annoying flipping back and forth, but I don't really have to do that anymore, and I'm glad so thank you for the mobile update!

I serisusly thought something was wrong with my phone when this new Moblie verson came up. I had to restarted to see if that would help but apparent i saw it was just a new version. Well this version SUCKS! The old verson was much easyee for me since i rp on here and get many messages and notes. Its just so complicating. It doesnt even look like a mobile version, it looks like you just compacted the site down and said "Heres the new version!" Im sorry but no. This was a horrible idea amd im VERY disappointes. Guess know have to have a computer with me costently because this just doesnt work. Its also very slow -.- and ruened my day...

So... Is there a specific reason the new submit page doesn't mesh with any other area of the site and looks completely unbalanced? Not to mention the bright background--eye strain for the win?

Some of the ideas for the new submit page are awesome, like the save and exit feature or making the Mature Content tag feature more noticeable. I want those. I don't want a faux st.ash.

DA. Please. If it isn't broke, don't fix it. "It looked outdated" is a horrible excuse. =/

I agree with this. It looks great with exception to that background :/ I think they're trying to blend stash and submit OTL it looks nasty though and disconnected, as you said.

The mobile site (which I am currently using on my iPod) is very nice but seems a bit cramped if you hold your device vertically but less cramped if you hold it horizontally. I like having the full menu being easier to access and new message area. However my profile and others seem very chaotic. Something that looks professional and clean on the desktop just looks crowded in the mobile site. I think the new site is good but needs a little bit of work to get it perfect. Of course this is my idea but I thought I would put in my two sense. (Or is it cents?)

I originally had myself on beta testing earlier but I turned it off to get away from the horrendous new mobile site... Well looks like I can't get away from it either way so I'm back to the beta OTL Oh well the More Like This feature is really cool for finding new artists.

But yeah back to the new mobile dA... While it's nice to have basically all the features of desktop dA on mobile I don't think it's really practical. I'm pretty sure making mobile formatted sites does not just entail shoving everything into one column and making everything scaled down size wise. It loads insanely slow for any and all pages to the point where I literally can't do ANYTHING; I can't even clear out messages in my inbox. The little x's to delete things are so tiny pressing them does not register 9/10 times. The deviation section is probably the worst though since it's so spaced apart and everything takes up so much space compared to the old site. Trying to use it is frustrating enough for me to want to just flip a table and give up trying to simply clear things out of my inbox.

And to make it worse I have this banner blocking the top of my screen because I apparently need to upgrade my browser .____. I'm on my iPod how do you expect me to upgrade it?!

Ugh this is getting really long I'll leave it here. Basically I am very very angry with this new mobile site :/ I'm fine with upgrades/changes to the mobile site just don't screw it up so much people can't even use it.

Sadly, as I spend the majority of the time on my mobile, to quickly check my messages, I find that nearly impossible to do on the new mobile interface.
