In our continuous effort to improve the deviantART experience, we're publishing weekly Site Updates to keep members informed and to gather feedback. Below is a list of recent changes to the site, bug fixes, and feedback that was brought up by members in the last Site Update .


What's New


The New deviantART Mobile Site

One of the most common requests from the community has been to update deviantART's mobile site. By popular demand, we've released a brand new version of the mobile site! The site is officially supported in the default browsers for the iPhone and Android phones and tablets.


Instead of developing two separate versions of the site—a desktop version and a mobile version—we've formatted the desktop site to fit into a mobile browser. This allows the mobile site to offer many more features than the previous version did, and it also makes for a more smooth user experience. The end result is a seamless mobile site, and it looks a little like this:



  • You can Browse art, check your Message Center, reply to Notes, browse your friends' Profiles and Galleries, visit the Forums, view today's Daily Deviations and do almost everything else you can on the desktop version of the site!
  • The drop down menu usually located in the top left corner of the site can be accessed by tapping on the deviantART logo, allowing you to easily access familiar tools without complication. 


  • You can find wallpapers for your phone using the "Wallpaper" app available in the main menu!
  • The Message Center is located in one place, which makes responding to comments and browsing art and Journals a quick, easy experience. Deviants who enjoy viewing their Message Center one section at a time can tap on the arrow next to "Messages" at the top of the Message Center. This will prompt the Message Center's left sidebar to appear and allow selection one section of the Message Center to view at a time.
  • Journal Skin designers, if you'd like control how your skin looks in a mobile browser, learn how to use our new mobile media queries .

Prints Integration on Deviation Pages

We've implemented an easier way to purchase art on deviantART! When viewing a deviation that is enabled as a Print, you'll be met with a sleek new menu that is designed to be simple and straightforward.



We've moved the Prints functionality from its own separate page and placed it within the deviation page, to help artists sell more of their work, and to reduce friction for buyers looking to purchase art they love.



Because the functionality of the old Prints pages has been added to the deviation page, you can now preview how your Prints purchase will look without having to leave the deviation page! Once you select a product type, the preview will update to reflect your selection.


The New Submit Art Page (Beta Testers Only)

Beta Testers, we're bringing you a complete revamp of the Submit Art page! While the page you're familiar with has been a long-standing part of deviantART, the new page is designed to be more intuitive, user-friendly, and up to date with deviantART as it is today.

Sta.sh
  • When changing the main file of an item originally uploaded through an app, the app attribution will now be cleared. Fixed by kouiskas
  • Non-Latin characters are now cleanly stripped from uploaded items' titles, as deviation titles still only support latin characters. Fixed by kouiskas
  • When going inside a stack, into an item, and then back to the stack, uploading a file inside the stack would put the file in Sta.sh instead of the stack. Fixed by kouiskas
Sta.sh Writer

  • Thumbnails of literature submitted through Sta.sh Writer appearing in stacks in the Message Center would have misaligned stack corners. Fixed by kemayo
  • Menus in Sta.sh Writer have been changed to be a little more responsive; you can now mouse from one to another without having to click. Fixed by kemayo
  • Classes are now allowed on span tags, for skinning purposes. Fixed by Alisey
  • Efficiency of fetching your Friends List in Sta.sh Writer's sidebar has been improved; less unnecessary data is pulled, and the menu builds faster. Fixed by kemayo and inazar

Thanks very much for the feedback left on last week's update ! Here's some of the feedback you left for us.

  • The most common response regarding the friends system was that deviants would like an easy way to separate lists of who they watch from lists of deviants who are their friends. Dramira-Official mentioned that this could also be applied to the Message Center, where new messages from friends could be listed before the general watch section.
  • lohkk and Yamitora1 suggested that an easy means of managing and organizing one's friendslist would be helpful, and ShapeShifter314 mentioned that being able to search through one's friends list would be useful as well.
  • Some deviants would like stacks within folders in their Message Center. Suggested by Krisoyo
  • A search function in Group galleries would be helpful. Suggested by IcyPheonix
  • Deviants would like notes sent to Groups to be included in their Sent Notes folder. Suggested by alexpeanut and Magical525
  • It would be helpful to be able to add keywords to Groups, so that they can be found more easily when searching in the Groups Portal . Suggested by MartinSilvertant
  • Some members would like to apply custom CSS to their Gallery's Featured folder. Suggested by Veroom

Hi there! If you tap the logo in the top left corner, dA's main navigation menu will appear, and the log out option should appear toward the bottom of the "My Account" section there. Hope that helps!

Hey there! You should be able to switch back to the new mobile site by going to the menu button in the top left corner and selecting "Switch to New Mobile Layout" from there.

ugh, I also really hate the mobile updates. It's so cluttered and a paint and doesn't fit as well in the window and just seems like it took ten thousand steps backwards. I don't like all the info getting dumped together and having to scroll to find anything, and I liked the simplified look it had before. Now I can barely use it, it's horrible.

That is because the site no longer handles BrewMP and Opera Mini Browsers, because it requires a High Level Javascript that Android and Apple(which are build on Unix/Linux OS Builds) can only load this.

Well I know the DA Staff including wreckling must please the higher income people such as the Upper and High Class that can support getting iPhones and Android Phones as well as paying $120 to $170 a month for the Service to use this site, it is unfortunate that Deviant Art seems to be not very friendly to those who are using anything of BrewMP and Opera Mini now, the fact is I HATE TOUCH PHONES, yes DA Staff, I hate them because Opera Mini can not work in removing messages without a specific code to that is only used in Android and iPhones, to render code that is used to remove the messages, much like HTML5 and CSS3...

And it is like a mini version of the Desktop site that would be used on Browsers with limited scripting(like older versions of Firefox and IE).

It is just that bad DA will not disclose much reason to it because it is an outside source that requires these changes, W3C and Microsoft...

I have to say that I hate the new mobile version with a passion. I tend to use the mobile version on my Wii. The new version is too close to the desktop version in intricacy, it mucks up the whole thing and makes it lag like crazy. It's made the whole thing crash a couple times and makes it a nightmare to find anything. I preferred it when it was quick and simple to find what I needed. I use my wii to help find references when drawing sketches that I scan and use for my digital art. In all, I preferred it the way it was before. I cannot stand the new layout.

Agreed. It's not the design itself, it's the fact that there is a little too much for a mobile to handle. That is why it is mobile. Less stuff to load, so the device does not spontaneously combust.

Well I have a phone that currently is a "Multi-tasking" Phone, but not a Smart Phone, and it is also the last of the "Brew MP" phones released by my provider, Sprint, otherwise they are going to switch out of them, I think it is sick that we are stuck of what we got due to Money issues, and this economy will fall off the "Fiscal Cliff" then we will no longer have a chance to use these sites unless we are rich.

Yep, most of us have dinky little phones that will kick the bucket if we try anything remotely similar to a normal page. That's why I'm happy that they brought back the wonderful Legacy version, now if only it didn't go to the front page when I select menu (this might already be fixed, for all I know). >.>

I'm thinking of just "switching to desktop" on my phone because the new mobile is so horrid.
The old mobile was PERFECTLY FINE (minus little things like not viewing groups) I could read and send noted and messages WITH EASE. Now even that's a challenge. my computer isn't up to date with the browser, so I'm unable to access dA currently. I used my phone 99% of the time, now I barely do so due to the long loading time and looooooing scrolling.
People are very unhappy with this version, so I hope you guys do something this time.

I have to resend every note like three times before it actually makes it to the person I'm sending it to. I've gotten into the habit of copying everything I type before sending, and I feel that I really shouldn't have to. The Notes screen lags a lot more than it used to as well.
I liked the older mobile version much more, I don't even browse art on it anymore because the scrolling just seems awkward to me and it takes a lot longer for me to browse. I immensely preferred the old way so I could just tap on the arrow without having to scroll.
I only use the mobile site nowadays to check my inbox, and I hardly ever trust it to actually send anything anymore.

This update isn't working out for me, not even a little bit. I have an Android and considering this update was releasing the new mobile site was big whoopy failure. Messages don't seem to show up and it takes to long to get working right. Come on, dA, you can do better.
