In our continuous effort to improve the deviantART experience, we're publishing weekly Site Updates to keep members informed and to gather feedback. Below is a list of recent changes to the site, bug fixes, and feedback that was brought up by members in the last Site Update .


What's New


The New deviantART Mobile Site

One of the most common requests from the community has been to update deviantART's mobile site. By popular demand, we've released a brand new version of the mobile site! The site is officially supported in the default browsers for the iPhone and Android phones and tablets.


Instead of developing two separate versions of the site—a desktop version and a mobile version—we've formatted the desktop site to fit into a mobile browser. This allows the mobile site to offer many more features than the previous version did, and it also makes for a more smooth user experience. The end result is a seamless mobile site, and it looks a little like this:



  • You can Browse art, check your Message Center, reply to Notes, browse your friends' Profiles and Galleries, visit the Forums, view today's Daily Deviations and do almost everything else you can on the desktop version of the site!
  • The drop down menu usually located in the top left corner of the site can be accessed by tapping on the deviantART logo, allowing you to easily access familiar tools without complication. 


  • You can find wallpapers for your phone using the "Wallpaper" app available in the main menu!
  • The Message Center is located in one place, which makes responding to comments and browsing art and Journals a quick, easy experience. Deviants who enjoy viewing their Message Center one section at a time can tap on the arrow next to "Messages" at the top of the Message Center. This will prompt the Message Center's left sidebar to appear and allow selection one section of the Message Center to view at a time.
  • Journal Skin designers, if you'd like control how your skin looks in a mobile browser, learn how to use our new mobile media queries .

Prints Integration on Deviation Pages

We've implemented an easier way to purchase art on deviantART! When viewing a deviation that is enabled as a Print, you'll be met with a sleek new menu that is designed to be simple and straightforward.



We've moved the Prints functionality from its own separate page and placed it within the deviation page, to help artists sell more of their work, and to reduce friction for buyers looking to purchase art they love.



Because the functionality of the old Prints pages has been added to the deviation page, you can now preview how your Prints purchase will look without having to leave the deviation page! Once you select a product type, the preview will update to reflect your selection.


The New Submit Art Page (Beta Testers Only)

Beta Testers, we're bringing you a complete revamp of the Submit Art page! While the page you're familiar with has been a long-standing part of deviantART, the new page is designed to be more intuitive, user-friendly, and up to date with deviantART as it is today.

  • Thumbnails of literature submitted through Sta.sh Writer appearing in stacks in the Message Center would have misaligned stack corners. Fixed by kemayo
  • Menus in Sta.sh Writer have been changed to be a little more responsive; you can now mouse from one to another without having to click. Fixed by kemayo
  • Classes are now allowed on span tags, for skinning purposes. Fixed by Alisey

Thanks very much for the feedback left on last week's update ! Here's some of the feedback you left for us.

  • The most common response regarding the friends system was that deviants would like an easy way to separate lists of who they watch from lists of deviants who are their friends. Dramira-Official mentioned that this could also be applied to the Message Center, where new messages from friends could be listed before the general watch section.
  • lohkk and Yamitora1 suggested that an easy means of managing and organizing one's friendslist would be helpful, and ShapeShifter314 mentioned that being able to search through one's friends list would be useful as well.
  • Some deviants would like stacks within folders in their Message Center. Suggested by Krisoyo
  • A search function in Group galleries would be helpful. Suggested by IcyPheonix
  • Deviants would like notes sent to Groups to be included in their Sent Notes folder. Suggested by alexpeanut and Magical525
  • It would be helpful to be able to add keywords to Groups, so that they can be found more easily when searching in the Groups Portal . Suggested by MartinSilvertant
  • Some members would like to apply custom CSS to their Gallery's Featured folder. Suggested by Veroom

I can't say anything about the mobile since, I don't use it but I have a question about the front page.

I always keep it on newest because I like seeing new things when I refresh but lately, that hasn't been happening. I refresh and everything/a good number of things remain unchanged, and not just for a couple seconds, but for many minutes at a time. I don't know if this is a bug or what but, I don't like it. Newest is supposed to show the deviations that are the most recently uploaded, things uploaded that second, not from 5 minutes ago. If I wanted that I'd put it to the Popular setting.
What the heck is going on? Do I need to submit a bug report?

You can't. I tried to search for one of ClearFog's journals using the search bar on the 'journals' page. Instead of finding journals by ClearFog, I got journals by everyone with the same words I searched! >:U

The new submit menu is HORRIBLE! You can't write nothing until the file is FULLY UPLOADED.
Oh man, and who have slow connection and just a bit of time?
While you upload your file, you should write the artist's comments, the tags, and do ALL you did before.
REALLY, it's horrible like this!!!
Please some admin read my critique and do something!
I'm sure that a lot of people will agree with me!!!

D--> My phone is a SGH-T139 (old phone, I know) , which means the new mobile updating that this website has isn't working on my phone at all. At least, I can't log in because the username and password bars don't show up and if I am logged in by some wild chance then I can't check my messages.
The old Deviantart mobile site was much easier on my phone, especially since I can 't afford Androids or all those other new phones. Do you think maybe you could make two separate mobile sites? I'm sure me and a lot of others would appreciate it.

MOBILE
You've managed to prove why you needed to develop a dedicated app. A lot of people with old phones seem to have problems with it. It loads slowly, so people with poor connection find it hard to use. It eats a lot of data, so those who can't afford good data plans can't really use it unless it's via wi-fi in the home, or free when out. There's also the issue of it just being a downsized version of the desktop. It makes parts of it very clunky to use with far too much clicking back and forth. Using a mouse and short cuts on a desktop is so very different to using a phone!! Parts of it are far to small for big hands so we just click the wrong things!!
Although in need of improvements, the old version had a simplicity that was attractive to many people. With this change you will just disenfranchise a lot of users on mobiles.
I have now given up using the mobile site!

SUBMIT PAGE
I'm one of those who thinks DA desperately needs a new submit page, but this isn't it! It fails to address any of the main issues that leave DA so far behind some of the other sites.
I've just been uploading photos to Flickr, and the upload tool may not be perfect yet, but it is really good. Then i come here and see what you're going to force on us i despair. I've pretty much given up adding photos to DA, and i honestly can't see myself uploading anything here ever again. My best work goes anywhere but here as it's just a painful experience to use DA compared to other sites.

THUMBNAILS
Another reason i'm basically giving up on DA. The prejudice shown against images in portrait format as against landscape is a disgrace on what is supposed to be a dedicated art site. The awful light background you needlessly added to some work is destroying the presentation of their work. It's an insult to them and their art!
If you can't see how bad this thumbnail fascism is then you shouldn't be working on an art site!!!

ADVERTISING
You've completely lost the balance of advertising on DA. It's bad enough with so much advertising flashing away at us, and some that auto plays, but adding adverts at the top of the comments is just too much.
You rely on us sending people here, and others coming here to search for art, but too much advertising will drive people away eventually. In the long term that will not be any good for your revenue.
Some of us may not pay to use this site, but you rely on us using it. It's time people at DA remembered that.
Myself and many of those i watch on here barely use the site any more, that's a whole bunch of people not sending traffic your way, and some of those had quite a lot of traffic!

my friend called me today to complain again. She loves the new DA format, but she has been having trouble lately. One time, she was on DA and while replying to a message, and DA just changed into a site, and when she went to a weird site. When she went to X out of the website, it was only titled "deviantART AD". The next day, she was using Cracked.com with DA in another tab. When she went to X out of Cracked.com, the tab DA was on had turned into a porn site called Creampie.com. So she wanted me to get on (since I have computer abilities) to get on and ask if it was DA or Cracked.com that was causing the strange pop ups, and if it was a virus or not, and what she should do

I have to say I don't like the new mobile site at all. I especially don't like the new message center. The button style interface on the old mobile site that let me conveniently see all my notifications / messages / notes, etc. was much better than the new "Message Center" where everything is bunched together. The links on the left sidebar of the message center are too small and the links dont even work! it just takes be back to the huge stack of messages i have to scroll through!!

idea for a quick fix to everyone's problem... a link to the old message center!!! at least give people an option...

The newest version of the mobile interface is really bad. Please change it back to the way it was before. It is far to easy to flinch on a touch screen phone and delete a message you have no intention to delete. Or at least let us choose which interface we like. Please please please change it back. The new interface is annoying.

Okay, about the mobile interface....
It still has some problems, seeing as when I try to submit a journal, I have to tilt my iPhone to horizontal format, click the journal, then do something to get the screen to move over there.
If you're going to let us operate our journals from the phone at all, at least fix that, please.
Honestly, instead of formatting the whole website into a smaller, phone format...why not make a totally new and creative format?
Making a new format would be more work, but would take less time than gradually fixing the current format into the phone.
Eventually it will turn into the new format as mentioned.
Also, changing back to the old formats and making edits to it to make it more accessible would ALSO work. Less time taken, just needs some edits.

My feedback is not positive: I see the mobile interface like I clicked the "view desktop interface", and not the mobile one, so, it is all messed up, and for an old mobile like mine (Nokia C5-03), even if upgraded browser, keeps on saying "upgrade your browser" .. but I cannot, I have the last version I can have!
So, it forces me to close it, because it says "memory full" and the browser crashes.

It was perfect like it was until last week.. now everytime I open DA, browser crashes.

Please, do something even for us "not iphone / android" users!

I can't submit crap unless I switch to the desktop site, but then I have to switch to mobile to send or recieve notes... And It almost always takes 2-4 tries to send. Sometimes when I push the send button, I flat out get redirected to the deviantart homepage! *dies*
The old mobile interface was better for messaging by far.
