In our continuous effort to improve the deviantART experience, we're publishing weekly Site Updates to keep members informed and to gather feedback. Below is a list of recent changes to the site, bug fixes, and feedback that was brought up by members in the last Site Update .

What's New

The New deviantART Mobile Site

One of the most common requests from the community has been to update deviantART's mobile site. By popular demand, we've released a brand new version of the mobile site! The site is officially supported in the default browsers for the iPhone and Android phones and tablets.

Instead of developing two separate versions of the site—a desktop version and a mobile version—we've formatted the desktop site to fit into a mobile browser. This allows the mobile site to offer many more features than the previous version did, and it also makes for a more smooth user experience. The end result is a seamless mobile site, and it looks a little like this:

  • You can Browse art, check your Message Center, reply to Notes, browse your friends' Profiles and Galleries, visit the Forums, view today's Daily Deviations and do almost everything else you can on the desktop version of the site!
  • The drop down menu usually located in the top left corner of the site can be accessed by tapping on the deviantART logo, allowing you to easily access familiar tools without complication.

  • You can find wallpapers for your phone using the "Wallpaper" app available in the main menu!
  • The Message Center is located in one place, which makes responding to comments and browsing art and Journals a quick, easy experience. Deviants who enjoy viewing their Message Center one section at a time can tap on the arrow next to "Messages" at the top of the Message Center. This will prompt the Message Center's left sidebar to appear and allow selection one section of the Message Center to view at a time.
  • Journal Skin designers, if you'd like control how your skin looks in a mobile browser, learn how to use our new mobile media queries .

Prints Integration on Deviation Pages

We've implemented an easier way to purchase art on deviantART! When viewing a deviation that is enabled as a Print, you'll be met with a sleek new menu that is designed to be simple and straightforward.

We've moved the Prints functionality from its own separate page and placed it within the deviation page, to help artists sell more of their work, and to reduce friction for buyers looking to purchase art they love.

Because the functionality of the old Prints pages has been added to the deviation page, you can now preview how your Prints purchase will look without having to leave the deviation page! Once you select a product type, the preview will update to reflect your selection.

The New Submit Art Page (Beta Testers Only)

Beta Testers, we're bringing you a complete revamp of the Submit Art page! While the page you're familiar with has been a long-standing part of deviantART, the new page is designed to be more intuitive, user-friendly, and up to date with deviantART as it is today.

Sta.sh Writer

  • Thumbnails of literature submitted through Sta.sh Writer appearing in stacks in the Message Center would have misaligned stack corners. Fixed by kemayo
  • Menus in Sta.sh Writer have been changed to be a little more responsive; you can now mouse from one to another without having to click. Fixed by kemayo
  • Classes are now allowed on span tags, for skinning purposes. Fixed by Alisey

Your Feedback

Thanks very much for the feedback left on last week's update ! Here's some of the feedback you left for us.

  • The most common response regarding the friends system was that deviants would like an easy way to separate lists of who they watch from lists of deviants who are their friends. Dramira-Official mentioned that this could also be applied to the Message Center, where new messages from friends could be listed before the general watch section.
  • lohkk and Yamitora1 suggested that an easy means of managing and organizing one's friendslist would be helpful, and ShapeShifter314 mentioned that being able to search through one's friends list would be useful as well.
  • Some deviants would like stacks within folders in their Message Center. Suggested by Krisoyo
  • A search function in Group galleries would be helpful. Suggested by IcyPheonix
  • Deviants would like notes sent to Groups to be included in their Sent Notes folder. Suggested by alexpeanut and Magical525
  • It would be helpful to be able to add keywords to Groups, so that they can be found more easily when searching in the Groups Portal . Suggested by MartinSilvertant
  • Some members would like to apply custom CSS to their Gallery's Featured folder. Suggested by Veroom

Hey there! We're testing this a bit differently than normal, it's only gone out to half of the beta testing program at this point in time, so if it's not showing for you, that's expected behavior.

I'd -LOVE- a way to separate friends' list!

Particularly separate boxes, so I could put my best friends in one, role models in another ( since my Premium Membership's gone and I can't use custom boxes anymore, I no longer have a place for my role models. They need attention! ), and then my regular friends in one more.

I always feel bad, because I want to be able to give my role models more attention, but I can't because I can only put them on my 'Friends' list, and, unfortunately, I don't have the pleasure to consider them my friends, so it seems inconvenient.

And yes, Group searches WOULD be AWESOME.

I have to say that the new submit page is an update I hope to not see in the future....
I really like the current submit art page for a couple of reasons:

It's neat and straight forward. The layout is centered, so all you have to do is scroll down, type away, and check a couple of things as you go.

It's only a page long to go through the submission process.

And I like the color scheme.

Sure being able to save what you've written is nice and all, but if it's similar to sta.sh's submit page, then that means there would be issues with submitting images exclusively to a group as well. I personally avoid using the sta.sh submitting process because of it's clunky layout, odd coloring scheme to DA's Normal Green theme, and how it's handles group images.
I know it's a beta test and all but, I don't entirely see why the submit art page has to be changed. I think it's fine the way it is. And if it ain't broke don't fix it.

Well, conveniently enough I just got my first iPhone the other day! I was using dA Mobile last night (didn't even know it was brand new) and I found it really convenient and worked perfectly. I found it a lot more user friendly than the real old one I'd used on my PSP a while back.

Sometimes the old mobile version pops up and I realize how much I preferred its clean look. The one thing that would've made it better is the ability to flip through pages of deviations rather than having to delete deviations to see the next set. I don't like the new site. It's glitchy, disorganized, and hard on the eyes. I like being able to comment on profiles and such without moving to the desktop site, but isn't that something that could have been added to the old one?

Also, no fixes for thumbnails that cut off significant parts of an artwork? I'm one of those who hasn't "gotten used to" the thumbnails and I still very much dislike them. I could see favorites or galleries much better with smaller thumbnails. I realize it was said to allow for the old thumbnails would require more coding, but doesn't it take significantly more coding to do many of the other site updates?

The new Submit page is... well, not that good. The colors are far too bright - I can see it being difficult for those with eyesight problems to see the outlines and text. For me, it's too hard on my eyes. It just doesn't fit the look of the site at all. Perhaps try darkening the colors some and matching the site's color scheme?

I have a small suggestion~ when viewing your own or other's profile stats, under "people so-and-so watches" it includes groups. Those aren't really people or artists i watch, just groups im part of. I feel like it's a little misleading and would prefer to have them separate. Something like, "people so-and-so watch" and "groups so-and-so is a part of."
I'm not really sure how others feel since it's such a small thing, but you know

For all the complaints I'm seeing, the new mobile friendly version of dA is a vast improvement over the old one to me. I'm going to be using it a lot more on my phone than I used to; and for what it's worth to the developers, it also works in the mobile version of Mozilla Firefox.

A way to select and submit multiple deviations at once as prints, or move/delete multiple deviations at once when arranging one's gallery, would be extremely helpful; as it takes a painstaking amount of time to do individally.

It's not that bad. It functions properly, except that it takes a lot longer to load.
It would be nice to have a checklist system for deleting multiple inbox messages. It's tedious to go through every single message one at a time.
I said this already, I know, but it's still a problem. I'm stuck with 3, 557 notifications right now, and I have to sift through them.
Also, maybe there could be some sort of a filter system? For example, you want to see deviations from someone, but there are some things they post that you're not really interested in. Well, you could set it so that it filters out deviations that have certain tags. Specifically, someone posts something that's sexual, etc., but you could set it so you don't get that type of deviation.
I'm not so concerned about that last part as the notifications.

The new mobile site is a hassle to scroll through.

I was thinking it might be a good idea to get an optional filter for the horror and macabre section? Like how older deviants have the option to turn on the filter for mature ones? It's not much of a big deal and I can ignore it just fine, but for people like me, a lot of horror/macabre deviations make me uncomfortable whether they're mature or not. It would be an added convenience, in my opinion.

I haven't found too many people who like the new mobile site. Frankly, it fixes a problem that did not exist before. And makes people scroll around way too much. A touch screen or scroll button on a smartphone is NOT the same as a mouse/desktop, and people will end up walking away from a mobile site that requires too much scrolling. This is a case of the way it was being superior to the way it is.

Ugh the new mobile site is horrible.
The *most popular/last 24hrs* bar overlays the search bar which inturn overlays the category thing, and the message count isn't even visible, everything is all cluttered and ughh. Not everbody has an iphone or the latest android x-x. Plus my username at the top doesn't work :s

I am just so glad my phone browser has a "single column view" option so i get a nice simple version of the desktop view. S:
I think you should adapt the mobile website for people with older/non-i/android phones.

Another problem with the mobile site is the scrolling.

That is, when I scroll down, it SELECTS THE WHOLE FUCKING PAGE and takes me down to the bottom, and then I have to scroll back up, but it takes forever and its choppy as hell (thanks to having 20 deviations on the same page) , and if I go up too far, IT DOES THE SAME THING WHEN I SCROLL DOWN AGAIN!

Oh! by the way the new submit page looks very complicated. With all of the pull down menu's it seems difficult to maneuver through it quickly. I also think there will be a lot of bugs in this new page as well. We don't have to be high tech, just enough to be able to share our work.

FantasiaKitty In reply to ??? [2012-10-07 14:16:52 +0000 UTC]

I, for one, like the new mobile site. I never was incredibly fond of the old one, and I like that the new one is more similar to the desktop version -- it makes it easier to navigate, and I haven't encountered any problems with it. I do, however, understand that it may not work that well on older phones, thus the number of people complaining about it. It might be wise of you to take this into consideration, and maybe have the option for people to use a lower-tech version of the mobile site if the new one is too slow or doesn't work properly. (Or is this going to be like the thumbnail fiasco where you completely ignore peoples' complaints and not change anything about the new mobile site just because you like it this way?)

Anyway, I would also like to offer a suggestion that many people have been bringing up on the past several updates, and that I think bears repeating: an OFFICIAL dA APP would be the greatest thing since canned bread in my opinion. Since you seem to enjoy keeping things 'modern' on this site and like to appeal to those who possess the latest iPhone technology and whatnot, I feel that an official app would be a big hit.

*Cricket noises* . . . Okay, I'm done now.

They don't have an app because they don't have to develop for Android and iOS, then go through the hassle to put it on both app stores, and the whole update awaiting approval thing. It's just a lot easier to have a website, where any device can access it.
