In our continuous effort to improve the deviantART experience, we're publishing weekly Site Updates to keep members informed and to gather feedback. Below is a list of recent changes to the site, bug fixes, and feedback that was brought up by members in the last Site Update .


What's New


The New deviantART Mobile Site

One of the most common requests from the community has been to update deviantART's mobile site. By popular demand, we've released a brand new version of the mobile site! The site is officially supported in the default browsers for the iPhone and Android phones and tablets.


Instead of developing two separate versions of the site—a desktop version and a mobile version—we've formatted the desktop site to fit into a mobile browser. This allows the mobile site to offer many more features than the previous version did, and it also makes for a more smooth user experience. The end result is a seamless mobile site, and it looks a little like this:



  • You can Browse art, check your Message Center, reply to Notes, browse your friends' Profiles and Galleries, visit the Forums, view today's Daily Deviations and do almost everything else you can on the desktop version of the site!
  • The drop down menu usually located in the top left corner of the site can be accessed by tapping on the deviantART logo, allowing you to easily access familiar tools without complication. 


  • You can find wallpapers for your phone using the "Wallpaper" app available in the main menu!
  • The Message Center is located in one place, which makes responding to comments and browsing art and Journals a quick, easy experience. Deviants who enjoy viewing their Message Center one section at a time can tap on the arrow next to "Messages" at the top of the Message Center. This will prompt the Message Center's left sidebar to appear and allow selection one section of the Message Center to view at a time.
  • Journal Skin designers, if you'd like control how your skin looks in a mobile browser, learn how to use our new mobile media queries .

Prints Integration on Deviation Pages

We've implemented an easier way to purchase art on deviantART! When viewing a deviation that is enabled as a Print, you'll be met with a sleek new menu that is designed to be simple and straightforward.



We've moved the Prints functionality from its own separate page and placed it within the deviation page, to help artists sell more of their work, and to reduce friction for buyers looking to purchase art they love.



Because the functionality of the old Prints pages has been added to the deviation page, you can now preview how your Prints purchase will look without having to leave the deviation page! Once you select a product type, the preview will update to reflect your selection.


The New Submit Art Page (Beta Testers Only)

Beta Testers, we're bringing you a complete revamp of the Submit Art page! While the page you're familiar with has been a long-standing part of deviantART, the new page is designed to be more intuitive, user-friendly, and up to date with deviantART as it is today.

Sta.sh
  • When changing the main file of an item originally uploaded through an app, the app attribution will now be cleared. Fixed by kouiskas
  • Non-Latin characters are now cleanly stripped from uploaded items' titles, as deviation titles still only support latin characters. Fixed by kouiskas
  • When going inside a stack, into an item, and then back to the stack, uploading a file inside the stack would put the file in Sta.sh instead of the stack. Fixed by kouiskas
Sta.sh Writer

  • Thumbnails of literature submitted through Sta.sh Writer appearing in stacks in the Message Center would have misaligned stack corners. Fixed by kemayo
  • Menus in Sta.sh Writer have been changed to be a little more responsive; you can now mouse from one to another without having to click. Fixed by kemayo
  • Classes are now allowed on span tags, for skinning purposes. Fixed by Alisey
  • Efficiency of fetching your Friends List in Sta.sh Writer's sidebar has been improved; less unnecessary data is pulled, and the menu builds faster. Fixed by kemayo and inazar

Thanks very much for the feedback left on last week's update ! Here's some of the feedback you left for us.

  • The most common response regarding the friends system was that deviants would like an easy way to separate lists of who they watch from lists of deviants who are their friends. Dramira-Official mentioned that this could also be applied to the Message Center, where new messages from friends could be listed before the general watch section.
  • lohkk and Yamitora1 suggested that an easy means of managing and organizing one's friendslist would be helpful, and ShapeShifter314 mentioned that being able to search through one's friends list would be useful as well.
  • Some deviants would like stacks within folders in their Message Center. Suggested by Krisoyo
  • A search function in Group galleries would be helpful. Suggested by IcyPheonix
  • Deviants would like notes sent to Groups to be included in their Sent Notes folder. Suggested by alexpeanut and Magical525
  • It would be helpful to be able to add keywords to Groups, so that they can be found more easily when searching in the Groups Portal . Suggested by MartinSilvertant
  • Some members would like to apply custom CSS to their Gallery's Featured folder. Suggested by Veroom

I'm going to assume you obviously did not consider that making a mobile site SPECIFICALLY designed for smart phones means that people with older.normal phones would be unable to use it. This was a really, ridiculously unnecessary and inconvenient update. Did you assume everyone has a smartphone? Did you consider releasing an app that would allow users with older phones to actually access the site? The ONLY way I can get anything to show up on my phone (and even then I cannot access my messages, I cannot logout and change accounts, I can only see how many messages I have) is by changing my settings to not display images. What's the point in being able to barely access this site when I cannot see images? This really ought to be addressed.

Not even! The page just won't load. It says "Page too large, some content may not be displayed correctly" and I'm stuck with a blank white screen. I looked at a response the staff sent to another person on this article and all it said was "I'm assuming your phone runs on Android?" It's a little ridiculous of them to assume that everyone runs either Android or Apple OS on their phone. My phone is six years old, it doesn't run either. The old mobile site worked PERFECTLY. Now I can't even check my messages.

I think it's ridiculous that
a) This change was not announced
b) It was formatted strictly FOR Smart-phones, as if everyone is supposed to have one
c) there's no option to use the older mobile site or an app
and d) It's been almost a week and no one has bothered to reply to me.

The only way I got a reply was to email support. Which asked me to take screenshots of the problem... when I said all I have is this phone.
It doesn't take screenshots. It can't even upload photos on fb.
The version before this had screw ups - no way to see what you said that the person was replying to, for one. - but at least I could get to my messages and notes and search artwork.
The only way I can reply is to play seek and find and hope I remember where I commented.
I can see how many messages I have though, just can't READ THEM.
All I get is the message menu that's usually on the left side of the pc version.

I've got Access Powered for a browser.

I can't even get a page to load to comment on. I agree with you, the inability to see replies on the past version was annoying, but at least it worked. Mine is just the AT&T MEdia Net. It's frustrating seeing I have a message and not being able to do anything about it. I used to do so much over my phone, now I can't do anything.

I already e-mailed them. Surprise, surprise, no answer...

Yeah. For a short time you could put the url of the page for replies etc in and the old page loaded. Then even that shut down.
I got one reply, it took its time. If the email didn't come with a copy of the message I'd be screwed.
I hear you. I don't have a working pc and even if I did it wouldn't have web for a while.
I got my phone at the Family Dollar for $30. Its prepaid and a pain 9 x out a 10 on a good day, but until now at least it worked.
I have people I'm working on projects with that I need to stay in touch with dang it!
ff.net pulled the update trick too - fixed the messages, killed the review button. If it ain't broke don't fix it, sheesh.
Thanks for the info though. Want the truth? I can even read this journal the way the page is. Everything is too smushed.

Amen. You and me both. I was mostly keeping in touch and trying to work out the plans and pricing, until I can get my laptop back. I planned on using my phone for messages even after I get a web-connected pc again, since its less expensive that way. So much for that.
If you want to browse though, I can suggest this [link] You put the URL in and you can get around a tiny bit better. You can't log in though.

Gotta say I'm not fond of the new update for the mobile page. It's too troublesome to navigate and the notes haven't been sending. Please bring back the old mobile page it was a lot easier to navigate and send messages as well as delete, fave and go through deviations and journals.

I absolutely loved the original mobile site. Used it daily on my PSP for three out of the four years that I've been on dA.

Sure it didn't have an upload feature (which would be considered somewhat of a major setback for a site like this) but it was really convenient when you wanted to check messages and/or explore art with QUICKNESS AND EASE... That being said, this new mobile site is just Horrible. Too cluttered, takes forever to load and has unnecessary items for a mobile site to have.

What makes it worse is that not only does this version make people like me who used the old mobile dA on their PSP/Wii/Older mobile device become obsolete, it doesn't even work that well with the people who have the latest smart phones. So in the end, what was the point of this update if it's not really benefiting anyone?

Please, just bring back the original mobile version DeviantArt?

I cant check my messages anymore, and m psp can't load the site anymore, i'm really getting crazy and very sad!!
Because it was very handy to have deviantart on my psp, so i could check my messages without my dad saw me on my pc(I have pc-days, thuesday, saterday and sunday -,-)

Of course they thought of that, they just didn't care old phone = no money = unlikely to buy sub, prints etc = who cares (my phone is ancient too, but fortunately opera mini can still read the site, possibly because it reads it as desktop site not mobile one :/ )

i dont like the new mobile layout, i wish they would go back to the old one. Maybe they could keep the old layout but add new things too it. The search bar doesn't even work on my phone, it just reloads the page (its an android phone)

Guys I can't believe you made the mobile site even worse but you did. The new search is actually harder to use then even the other version before. You actually have to use a button to go to a whole different submenu to change the search time frame when it took one click before. I can't believe you guys took an even worse step in the wrong direction after the new mobile. But somehow you did. Please rethink what you are doing and go back to the original mobile version before it's too late. Or get a Web person who know mobile design.

Hello! I'd like to report an error that's happening in the front page and also in other pages that features deviations, like deviants' galleries, favourites, etc. I don't know if this is happening only with me or if this also happens with other deviants here, but when using Google Chrome, the deviations seems to be out of place, as well as their "shadows" (Sorry, but I don't know how to call them. Also, forgive my bad English), like in these picture: [link] , [link] .
As you can see, it is a total mess and it really annoys me. If this also happens to other people, please let me know.

I would like to state that my Samsung Verizon prepaid phone cannot handle the new mobile site... I can see how many messages I have, but can't read any. And the site is screwed up seven ways from Sunday. Please make an option to turn the old one back on. My poor old Access Powered browser can't take it.

Ah, that will probably be the reason, then. We only technically offer support for the most recent Android and iOS releases. That said, if your phone is not one of those, you should notify the Help Desk to see if your phone's user agent can be added to the list of user agents that can access the legacy mobile site.
