Oh look! I finished an actual piece that wasn't just a practice spoof :0 SHOCKING! For some reason, I just simply cannot produce lineart during seasonal breaks or when not at school. Go figure. It must be the free time involved! SAD, but true.

Anyway, as the title suggests, it's a commission. It's a continuation to the previous one, that being this one: [link] of ~Escafanatic421 's character Archael. Actually, it's still Archael, but in a more demonic form, now dubbed Molaphenolese.

Here's the story behind the character:

It was a tragic day in heaven when God was murdered, no one was prepared for the calamities that would result and in a flurry of confusion the angelic hosts performed a mass inquisition trying to find the killers. There was one, a general named Archael, who saw God in His last moments and became permanently soaked in His blood. It was then that the Archangel Michael fell upon him and accused him.

There was no trial, and Archael, Bearer of the Seven Celestial Balms, was cursed with the demonic name Molaphenolese and imprisoned in a realm of eternal darkness. He eventually freed himself to the mortal plane and this is where the villain came into play.

While suffering in the Dark Prison, Archael/Molaphenolese forsook his warrior passion, feeling that it did not help God in His greatest hour of need and was therefore worthless. As a more caring, nurturing soul was
born, the warrior was left to fester deep in the subconscious.

With his isolation the Forsaken Angel’s mind has gone rotten, seething with rage at the human masses. Did they so much as flinch when their God died? NO! They merely went on with their lives, poking at religion with hardly a care and going astray.

You know who to call if you wanna know more!

Anyway, concerning more technical aspects, I tried a different coloring style on this image. In fact, those who have been watching me for a while know that I've been attempting to paint instead of cell shade. I think I managed that in this piece, compared to previous tries anyway, and I'm very content with the results (and so is Esca, so ladida!).

There are watermarks on the image because well, the one at the bottom is that easy to remove :\ and yeah, y'know, it's a commission >_>

Coloring style used is pretty general amongst dA anime artists but if you wanna know how it was done, note me or something Yeeeeah...

I think that's all.

Approx. time: who cares, I don't remember! (which means a long time, yes?)

Hello! Thank you for asking, but I will have to decline. This image is a commission; therefore the person who paid for it has half of the ownership.

If you really want to use it, message ~Escafanatic421 and tell him to email me with his consent. If he emails me granting you permission, I won't mind if you use it.

Thanks for your understanding!

Study the structure of real wings and practice. Only way to get it right is if you know how it is shaped in reality!

I really like the overall color scheme and motion on this piece. The hands are well done, though I feel like maybe the forward one should be a bit bigger since it is foreshortened, and closer to the viewer than the hand in the back. Also, I think the wings looks especially cool, with all the highlights and high contrast.

This art is absolutely beautiful. The feeling of abandonment and loathing are very pronounced in the dark tones. The background is both frightening, and alluring at the same time. I love the darkness that just encases this entire picture.

I'm always amazed at how well someone like you can convey so many feelings in just one picture. You can certainly glimpse the effect of the loss Molaphenolese has experienced. Yet at the same time, you can see the disregard he has for his former self.

As always, I have such a respect for the work that has gone into this piece. I know it's been a while since I've critiqued, but you are definitely still one of my absolute favorites! Wonderful job!

You know I love getting comments from you 8D You seem to always cover as much as you can about what you see in the image, and that's very encouraging.

Thanks again for the compliments. I'll try to put in as much in the next piece
Cheers!

This is very lovely. It's interesting for a newcomer to Photoshop (like me) to see which tools were used. I'm still trying to figure them out. *cries* Augh, I need to find someone who can teach me to use the program...and find the time....and the money to get it at home...*sob*
Anyway, good job. A definite fave!

I mostly said everything I wanted to in that e-mail I sent upon the piece's completion, but it is an absolutely gorgeous piece, Ikeda. The way you were able to capture in all the details that I wanted was spectacular and am always grateful that I asked you to take up this series of three drawings ^^

how do u paint so well in photoshop. even with a tablet i dont think I could make it look so smooth. I am in progress with one right now and it just doesnt look right.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ikeda In reply to Komari-TK [2007-01-05 18:26:28 +0000 UTC]

It took me 10+ tries, looking at `spyroteknik 's video tutorial, and a very difficult transition from cell-shading to learn the basics of painting actually, so that was a lot of effort. It definitely didn't come over night Keep practicing, observing what other digital painters do, and reading tutorials if you want to get it fast! (though you can take your time and experiment like I did, leaving aside most tutorials 8D) Good luck!

What's really cool is that speck of red jewel in the midst of all the dark shades of grey and blacks. It really sticks out and offers a nice point of interest.
