It occurs to me that this MIGHT be a plausible way of resolving the divide of power in a less destructive way than Amon would have done.
However, I'm a bit reluctant to say so as...well, all kinds of problems seem evident in that line of thinking. I honestly feel a bit dumb just saying that as I'm well aware of the deeper problems and ramifications in the bender/non-bender split in the Avatarverse, so there's a lot of interesting things that could be taken from that; a perspective in the fandom that Bending is more natural then non-bending, the economic and social weirdness that would result from mass bending suddenly being a THING (the electric plants being overrun with new firebenders demanding a paycheck for some Lightningbending for one) and similar things, with so much supply over demand things might well collapse. And then it depends on your interpretation of the spirits in the Avatarverse; if it was that simple, and if it was desirable, the spirits would ALREADY have everyone Bend.
Or perhaps they DID want that but have been unable to communicate this desire, but I'm a bit reluctant to say that theory as I just KNOW that someone will say that it's the rise of technology that weakens the spirit world and that kind of talk really annoys me on a deep philosophical level. It makes a LOT of assumptions and Techology Is Bad and Science Is Bad concept sthat are spread WAY too deeply into the world. I remember someone once suggested that the Fire Nation ships are CGI because 'they don't belong in this world' and I was like WHAT. But seriously, that kind of talk bugs me espicially since Bending gave rise to that technology in the first place and the show has never given any opinion about technology as a negative thing at any point (which is a big bonus; you often see a LOT of shows with active spirits and natural power decrying technological advances) and I think I'm going to stop here before I turn this into a psychotic rant because this is something I'm very passionate about. Sorry. :T
On the other hand, that new Firebender just looks so dang HAPPY! Maybe Bending-up everyone in the world might be a good idea in some way. It's worth putting some thought about, and there's certainly fanfic fuel at that.

Heya hvk,
It's no problem dude. It's been a while since I heard from you and your cool insights anyway
Your ideas reach out farther than what the series explores From our own history, we have been able to more or less adapt to the great changes in our society. If we look at the Industrial Revolution, the willful manipulation of Nature accelerated human growth (with a price paid via pollution and human commoditization). Somehow, everyone being able to bend will topple racism and make the city a noisier one, but it shouldn't be something as extreme as societal or economic collapse
Regarding the spirit idea, I'm drawing from my understanding of Eastern Mysticism regarding energy flow. This energy (The Chinese call Chi) is present in all living things. This already implies that Everyone can bend. However, since we are born with different circumstances, physical and psychological, our energy flow may be obstructed. I read in a Tumblr post and confirmed via Wikipedia article that the locations Korra and Amon place their thumbs to give/ remove bending are also Chakra points (gates where energy flows). It's a simple matter of closing or opening those gates to produce the required effect.
And you're right, Technology is not bad. However, the way people rely on it too much is what makes it bad. Over reliance on it means they forget (that's the keyword) the hidden stirrings of reality and forget their connection to their Spiritual natures. Energybending is the highest spiritual art because it reaches deeper than just manipulation of physical forces (earth, air, water, fire). No one else can Energybend because that requires full understanding of the world, which only the Avatar can do.
Thanks for the comment dude. You're given me something to think about regarding the Avatar world and Spirituality

No problem; I just noticed some reblogs of your pictures on Tumblr and I was like 'DANG IT I NEED TO CHECK IF ILLEITY HAS NEW POSTS OF COOL STUFF'. The revelation that you've done a Korra comic was a pleasant surprise.
I'll admit, I feel the Industrial Revolution was a good thing except for the human commodity nonsense and the pollution (though I think it might be interesting to see a story from the perspective of a mechanical lifeform that views an increasingly industrialized world as crawling out of the dark ages and shudders at the notion of cancerous vegatative defilement when plants overgrow civilized places). I like to examine, what exactly does Bending change in things, if widespread so much? I was irritated at the people who didn't think that Bending's removal should affect a person so badly as it's shown, as I think of Bending as an innately spiritual component integral to their natures, so Amon' de-Bending was spiritual castration or something even worse.
I'm inclined to follow your theory about the chakras, and I think that Amon was using a variation of the healing technique (which I interpret as Waterbending used as a medium to directly affect the body's energies) to artificially close off the chakras. I've suspected this ever since I found that Amon SPECIFICALLY target the amon chakra while Aang and Korra' Energybending touches different ones (the Heart and Mind the Lion-Turtle spoke of) which one can read a lot into. I think I read once that the amon chakra deal with stress, which could mean that Amon induced vast amounts of stress or fear, while I think Aang and Korra 'open up' the heart and the mind in a spiritual sense (it's a lot more touching and spiritually sweet in my head). I think someone once mentioned something about how the chakras Aang touches may reflect guilt, so it's my headcanon that Aang de-Bends people by infusing guilt into them. Not the best theory, but that's my headcanon for you.
To be clear, at the core of my every belief and conceptual model is the thought that 'Science and Technology are awesome and perfect FOREVER' and all of my thought on matters relating technology and scientific advance is pretty much that. It's ridiculously hard for me to summerize my feelings on the matter (aside from perhaps an observation in the line of 'artifice is an improvment over nature, as artifice is guided and wholly benevolent for the maker) and my feelings on the matter constitute it's own spiritual understanding. However, I feel the majority of the problems people associate with technology (lack of spirituality and such) comes from people who use technology without understanding the glory of how it works or is develouped. I think the appropriate route is to make the spiritual aspects of technological thought more widespread and known; not 'apart' from the natural world and spirituality, but an aspect of it as much as anything else. (The world of the Avatarverse certainly seems better off now that the Fire Nation has shared it's tech with everyone! )
You're welcome! I quite enjoy talking about this stuff; you're one of my favorite people to give back and forth comments with.

That was one sticking point that came to me after watching the season finale, so I decided to make a quick comic about it. In a few days, it pretty much overshadowed "The Fan-Fictional History of Marceline" as my most viewed deviation, lol!
"Though I think it might be interesting to see a story from the perspective of a mechanical lifeform that views an increasingly industrialized world as crawling out of the dark ages and shudders at the notion of cancerous vegetative defilement when plants overgrow civilized places" Have you ever considered being a science-fiction writer? Because that's a really smart idea and it turns our human-first viewpoint on it's head
And you're right to be annoyed, as it reveals their surface-deep understanding of Spirituality and connectedness with the world. They would only see "Oh my gosh, my ability to make awesome kung-fu moves is gone!". The people who lose their bending become sullen not because they're sad they lost their kung-fu coolness but they become alien to their connectedness to the world and such. "Spiritual Castration" is exceptionally apt!
I think we both read the same article regarding stress (and the writer is right in saying it can be reversed). I remember in the original series, Iroh was teaching Zuko how to redirect Lightning and it requires emotion control. In fact, we can say that every Martial Art requires that we put our emotions in check to be able to use what we learned effectively. Stress, fear and distractions all lead to failure and in the case of the Avatarverse (You coined a new term, lol), it leads to actual failure to bend
Your belief system is well-measured and tolerant! Kudos! That's rare for people. I studied Psychology before and the sad thing is people's minds take a cognitive shortcut in judgments. They value "What can be seen" vs "What cannot be seen", "What is easy to think" vs. "What is harder to think but can lead to growth" among other dichotomies. Sometimes, we can't blame people for acting this way, because we're hardwired to make thinking less taxing for our brains as possible. However, mankind deserves to be scolded for willfully taking the safe road in existing. Spirituality has suffered from new technology, certain atheists screaming bloody murder, and people blindly following their faiths! That's why I appreciate Studio Ghibli so much for aligning Spirituality, Technology, Kindness and Wonder in their movies.
And I enjoy my exchanges with you as well! You always add new insight to stuff I'm working on and the series and fandom in general and it's great

It makes a lot of sense if they're following Chinese spirituality/ mysticism closely.
Every living thing has Energy and if you think about it, the benders might simply be the lucky ones who had their energy flow aligned so they can bend. They should really address this in the future

Haven't seen something like Korra for ages... It's way better than the previous "Avatar" series.
YAY for Korra xD Do you ship any specific pairing?^^
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
illeity In reply to PanicatsPhantasie [2012-07-15 16:05:58 +0000 UTC]
I think it's better because the themes are much more complex. Racism, Adolescence, Spiritual Growth, among other things
My normal pairing is: Bolin x Korra. I love these two together. They got along so well during that one episode, that I felt that they're not gonna end up together (Ironic huh?). Somehow, first loves are doomed to fail and it's the same for Korra. Apparently Korra likes the moody, serious guy
I also have an "irrational" pairing: Korra and Asami. I ship these two together because it's utterly hilarious and improbable that these two have any interest in each other. The posts in Tumblr on these two are really, really funny

Absolutely! The animation style is more adult and faster too!
Awww I love Bolin x Korra too <3 I kinda thought the same when they ate noodles together... it was just too perfect
Mako is such a stereotype guy =3= But maybe his character develops during the story too...^^
Korra and Asami haha that's nice too x3 (shojo-ai ftw )
I could imagine you to do some comic strip to that couple! I saw your "Adventure Time"-Comics are kind of shojo-ai-ish too
Just a suggestion
