I feel like they save the status-quo changing plots for the last season. Like the "energy-bending to remove bending" from the last episode of LOA, to "energy-bending to give back bending" on this one.
It might be possible. Energy flows through everyone so it can be said that the benders were just lucky enough to have their energy aligned to bend fire or earth, etc, when they were born.

I'm not into Korra shipping myself. And yeah, Bolin is pretty awesome! I just wish we got to see more of him in the series, more Korra to Bolin conversations, and maybe seen him less as Mako's little brother and more as Bolin the sweet, funny nice guy with earth bending.
