Description
So, uh... I did a thing.
Longterm watchers of mine might realise something about this in that in my 12 years of being on dA, this is my first ever polished digital picture with lineart on it. There are a two reasons why I've never done digital lineart. The first is that I'm rubbish at it. The second is that I think painting without lines gets you closer to realism, but in truth, this was a post-facto justification for the former reason for the longest time. I've never been able to draw a good line on my tablet and I kept thinking that everyone who could must know something that I didn't. Turned out I was half right. I started talking to a friend of a friend who does comic style work of a high standard and he pointed me to "Lazy Nezumi" which is a "stabiliser" for Photoshop: a piece of software that smooths your strokes and removes some of the variance and noise. I downloaded it and while it wasn't an instant-win cheat-code for lineart, I could immediately see the power of the tool. Lineart went from being "impossible" to just "hard".
I drew a sketch on paper and set to work trying it out and experimenting to determine which settings worked for me. It was tough going at first and much of the lineart around that wolf is pretty poor, but as I went across to Murk I started to figure things out. I think parts like Murk's left hand are a night-and-day improvement over, say, the wolf's chest armour in terms of line quality. I want to keep working on this and I'm thinking of trying to do a few really quick, relatively simple bust-size sketches of various characters in order to really get into the groove with ditigal lineart. I think this is a worthwhile pursuit because like nothing else, lineart teaches precision and manual dexterity. A line is right in one place and wrong in every other place. Get it perfect or go home. For a long time, I've wedged this precision gap with dogged stubbornness and exploited the forgivingness of Photoshop to work in high resolution. I'm going to continue to do my highly polished paintings without lines, but at the same time, I think more lined drawings to a lower level of completion will improve my art across the board and hopefully make me faster to boot.
This picture was my first experiment with the technique, however, the subject is something new too. I've decided I'm going to make Murk a spin-off setting from SteinWill 's Rebels setting. Before Murk joined the rebel army, he served for a few years as a mercenary and I decided to delve into that era of his life a bit more. My tastes are a little more grimdark and edgy than Steinwill's and this will give me somewhere I can go and be edgy without corrupting his setting.
I have an outline for each of the members of Murk's old squad in my head and I'm quite keen to get them on canvas. I drew this wolf character without really any thought though so while he's likely to be a named character going forward, he'll be completely different next time you see him.
Happy for any critique on this. I'm completely new to digital lineart and adapting my colouring and shading technique to having lines hasn't been easy either so I'm sure there's plenty of room for improvement.

boy are they cheerful boys

i'm lucky sai has a built in stabiliser, i never knew there exists a world without smooth lines. i stll occasionally draw on paper and scan those to colour them on the PC, i think drawing lineart on paper is faster for some reason

i actually like Murk's shoulder the most, cause it has thick outline on the exterior and thinner lines on the interior, which reminds me of comic books

Haha yeap, gotta find what you love in life- for some people it's raining hell from a helicopter gunship
The world without smooth lines is a dark and desperate place. 2/10, would not recommend.
Yeah, I think a pencil feels a lot more natural than a tablet, especially since the line appears right where you hand is and not up on the screen somewhere.
Hmm, that's a good observation. I think I've figured out how to make more lines like that but it took me a bit of fiddling with the settings. I like that bit too, I'll try and do more of it.

haha, I like how murks rifle and equipment turned out, they look cool. I heard about a feature in a newer PS that helps with jiggly lines, but I never heard about that tool. might give it a try.
I think you might already know, but what helps me with lines is flipping and tilting the canvas in PS. Im righthanded and can draw lines most confortably when they are angled about 20° horizontally.
also, what I learned when doing lineart, you have to be VERY careful when it comes to lips. you cannot draw them too detailed, otherwise it will look too dominant, which I think is the case with murk's lips x)

Thanks!
Hmm, yeah apparently a lot of programs come with stabilisers now. I use an old version of Photoshop so Lazy Nezumi was very helpful. It has a free 15 day trial if you wanna experiment with it and see if you think you'd use it. I have heard of people rotating their canvas while they're drawing too and it makes sense. I rotate my paper around when I'm drawing so I guess it's just the same thing.
Haha yeah, I think you're right. Lips are one of those things that's weird with lineart since lines are so high contrast and lips are very smooth.

Awesome drawing, both Murk and the wolf look like a solid tag team.
It looks kind of like Murk is stepping on his tail though LOL
On the Wolf's vest, is that his kill count?

Cheers! I have a few working ideas for that character and a couple of the others for the squad. They're gonna be a rather manic, morally-grey, fast-and-loose outfit where Murk's bravado, irreverence, and often violent tendencies are the rule rather than the exception. I'll chat to you on Discord about it, some of what I have planned is rather edgy and cuts a bit close to reality I think so I'm wondering if it might upset people haha
Haha damn, yeah, so it does, now you've mentioned it, I can't unsee it! I think I might have made that tail a bit small and maybe it should be fluffier too. Ah well, that can come under that character's redesign.
Hmm, I'm not sure what the tally's for actually. Something like a killcount, a mission count or maybe even how many bullets the vest's stopped.

I can see the amount of bullets the vest has stopped as being an original idea
