I'd be interested in this journal CSS as it already fits the colour scheme of my avatar and tag, but I'm wondering if I can add a wide side panel, wide enough to fit three icons side by side?

To add a header image, I usually code the URL as a background in .journaltop section of the CSS like this:
.journaltop {
background-color:#fff !important;
background-image:url(YOUR URL);
background-repeat:no-repeat;
background-position:top left;
border:medium none !important;
height:38px;
margin:0px;
color:#fff;
}
Just set the background repeat and position to whatever you like, then adjust the height to the actually height in pixels of your image, and set the background color. It should work that way.
