How to draw with soft pastels on a black sheet of paper?Facebook | Tumblr
When I posted my first drawings done in this style, they received a lot of positive feedback. One day I was asked to do a tutorial which would explain how I draw such drawings. Therefore I decided to write it, it is simple as that
I'm aware that the drawing "Breathe" that I presented in this tutorial isn't as impressive and amazing as I promised that every artwork drawn in this style might be - but it's just a simple and quickly done portrait which was drawn to show you how I draw like that step by step.
Last but not least, it's dedicated to Sekhmets-child and Little-Miss-Living for their help with my imperfect English
Hope you like it and find it helpful. Good luck with drawing!

I don't know if this has been said already, but the thing with the blade inside that you didn't know the English name of is a pencil sharpener.

I know, but it's not a usual pencil sharpener and I wondered if there is a special name for it

Yay, have fun To be honest, I am not pleased with this tutorial anymore, you're very welcome to read these: ilojleenart.tumblr.com/post/10…

but they are about drawing with coloured pencils, not soft pastels. However believe me, it's better to use coloured pencils, they don't crumble and they are more precise.

Oh, but I forgot, I sometimes use a hairspray! Sorry I didn't tell you earlier, I haven't used pastels in a long time so I forgot.

This is a very cool tutorial. I was wondering if you would say something about how you photographed these kinds of artworks for reproduction and for display. I'm working on a large piece using a pastel-on-black-paper technique, and would like to document my progress step-by-step. Getting the lighting and focus has been extremely difficult, and even then only partially successful. And then, when your works are done, you have to publish them online for people to view. Thanks again for sharing your techniques, and in advance for answering this question.
Best regards for the new year ahead,
Ed

A happy new year to you, and everyone here! Actually I spent the first few hours of 2014 working pastel-on-black and on this very problem. My scanner can't accommodate any piece much larger than 8-1/2 x 11 inches. The composition I'm working on -- as well as much of the stuff I'll be doing this year -- is much larger, so I have to photograph. This one is 20 x 30 inches. What I did with some success last night is stand up my composition, set up my camera on a tripod so that the lens is as square to composition as possible, use a RAW slow setting and put the shutter on self-timer to click. I took several different shots, and oh yes, no flash. Then I uploaded the whole mess (it does start off looking awful) onto my computer and used Photoshop to adjust the edges and tweak the lighting. The result is in my Scraps gallery. I'm not satisfied, but it's a good start, I think.

Hej
Pytanko. Tym czym robisz szkic to po prostu biała kredka, czy coś w rodzaju ołówka? I najważniejsze. Czy w razie pomyłki można użyć gumki i zmazać to co nie potrzebne?

Najpierw ołówkiem, a potem pastelem w ołówku. To przecież tutorial o rysowaniu pastelami Na moim blogu ilojleen.blogspot.com/ jest polskojęzyczna wersja, jakby co.
I tak, pastel da się wymazać

You're awesome, thanks for this! I've always wanted to try this technique...And your tut was very instructive and simple! Used here. [link]
I didn't have the materials mentioned, like the black canson paper and soft pencil pastels.(the ones I have can't sharpen)...but I think it worked out OK.
