There was always that one smart kid in the back of your class, and he was always... A bit odd. The way he sat, with his knees tucked close to his chest and his thumb pushed against his lip. His jet black hair practically sticking off the top of his head like some weird anime character. The dark bags under his eyes probably from many all nighters researching something or another. He was always so odd.

One day, the last day of school to be exact, your views on him changed.
L, that is all he called himself, walked the same way you did when you would walk home from the bus. You two never talked unless you asked him what homework had been assigned, but today you figured... Why not? School was over. You would probably never see him again besides maybe passing in the hallways.

You watched him walking alone ahead of you, with his thumb against his lips again and staring off into the sky, thinking.

"U-um... L?!" You yelled, seeing him turn around in response. Smiling that you got his attention, you ran up to him. Panting a few times, as you met his side, you continued on with your introduction, "I'm in your class *pant* if you didn't know."

"I realized," he said bluntly and turned back to facing forward. "You're _______-san." You blushed as he added the -san. You had almost forgotten that his adoptive family was from Japan.

"Y-yeah. So anyway, aren't you happy summer finally came?" You asked, trying to make small talk. Honestly, you were awful at small talk but could at least try.

"I suppose so. I would get further in the kira case, then." He replied shrugging.
You tilted your head a little in confusion. Kira case? Was that some new court case you had missed? Normally your mom is all over those drama cases. Why haven't you heard of this one?

"Kira case?" You questioned, making sure you had heard him right.

"Of course! Don't you know it? It's HUGE in Japan. It might even impact America, too!" You looked over to see his pale blue eyes sparkling and, for once, coming to life. You smiled, seeing this was finally something he was truly passionate about. Maybe you were beginning to actually see who L Lawliet really was.

"Heh, sorry I don't follow japanese cases." You said, scratching the back of your neck nervously, due to his eyes so focused on yours. "What exactly is it?"

"Basically, criminals of all kinds are dying of all the same reason, a heart attack. Japanese police forces say it can't be a coincidence, so they have to find three things. The killer, his motive, and his weapon!" L practically threw off his backpack and rummaged through it, pulling out a small notepad and pen. "Look! This is all the evidence I've gathered so far!" You leaned in, and as you scanned through, it seemed like the whole notebook was filled! Some pages you could read in English but others were quickly written in Japanese; figures L would learn Japanese at such a young age in the states.

You giggled as he ranted on and on over his carefully collected evidence. It was quite impressive, to say the least, it's not like you could ever do that.

"It's so... cool." He finally said, calming down and putting back his notepad. It seemed 'cool' was the only word he could find to suite the hobby. You saw him glance over in your direction before he replied, "Em, sorry if that's weird. I-.... I've kind of... Always wanted to be a detective." He mumbled the last part but you still seemed to hear him loud and clear.

"I'm sure, no wait, almost positive, that will happen," You said poking him in the shoulder. You were really starting to like this kid... This L. He was so nice and so open at times, all anybody needed to do to see that was to talk to him. "With all this done on your own, you're going to be one great detective."

You looked at him with a big smile, watching him blush at his feet. "Heh, thanks. I really mean it. No one has even said something close to that to me." L held his arm and sighed, trying to hide a smile all the while.

"Hey, did you want to come over to my place today? It's just around the block from your house. I'll help you with your kira case!" You offered, trying to not feel the butterflies in your stomach. It was the least you could do for him, and he seemed to be warming up to you anyway.

"Sure! I'm kind of stuck right now anyway, so help would be wonderful," He looked away for a moment. "One question. Do you have cake or cookies or something? Candy?"
You laughed and nodded. "We sure do! We just bought a bunch the other day."

Again, L's eyes lit up and he grabbed your hand. "What are we waiting for?!" His eyes danced and a genuine smile was on his face just before he turned and began to drag you across the sidewalk.

"W-where are we going?!" You stuttered, trying to regain use of your feet.

"To the sweets!" He yelled back, his hair flying in all directions. You grinned and held his hand tighter.
So this was L Lawliet. Crazy haired, sweet tooth detective. At that moment, you knew just who you would be spending your summer with.
