Update 4: I replaced the beams and the ring by colored versions and a sonic rainboom
Old version , which one do you like better?Update 3: I've been told that the wings of Nightmare Moon look like manta ray, so I added more details
I also tried to make her magic look more evil and added shading to Celestias magic.
Update 2: Fixed missing gradients (trees), missing color (blue tree) and floating island, kindly pointed out by ~steeph-k and ~Starsword

You know whats odd all Celestia did when the fight started was running away from nightmare before she used the elements on her. That's what a coward would do not a celestial princess I'm a little disappointed of her.I was expecting a little bit more from her.

First running away instead of fighting is what a loving sister would always do. Whenever one of my siblings got mad at another (a long time ago, now everybody is old enough) the second tried to avoid a fight in order not to hurt the first.

I had a totally flashback to the final boss of Okami when I first saw this. The music was going through my head as well.

Very intruieging. I think you could have worked a bit harder on the background, which looks a trifle hurried and not at all detailed, but I have seen far worse art by far worse artists than yourself. One thing I cannot aplaud you enough for is the approach. I have seen a great deal of MLP art and I have yet to see a single picture other than yours with an overhead view. It's a very unique approach and I realize also not an easy one to do. What's important as that you took that challange head on, which takes guts. I think Steeph-k had a valid point when he mentioned that you could have used a gradient to color the trees. This said, I also have to say, I really like the way you've done the beam of magical energy Celestia is shooting. The use of the swirled white that covers it gives the observer the impression that the beam is rotating, which I think is cool as well. Over all, definatly a thumbs up. Keep on working on your art. As Olivander said in the first Harry Potter movie "I think we can expect great things from you, Mr. Potter". I know, I'm such a nerd.. Please don't mock me.

That's true, I like doing foreground objects / ponies better, and doing background feels like it takes forever and it's boring, so I switched from doing bezier curves to using the freehand tool and simplyfing the result. Perhaps this will change if I do more background. I thought I vectored all the background objects present in the screenshot, did I miss something? Or should I add background objects like plants from other scenes?

I think it's the first overhead scene in the show too, at least I couldn't find a second one for a closer look at a pegasus from top.

Wow! Awesome work. This looks actually better than the original ^^ (Nightmare's mane and the lighting at the collision for example). I'll take some time to look for details later. But already now I think it would be worth the printing costs

Here's what I found:
The green trees would look better with a gradient or with more than two colors. Their trunks are lighter and grayer in the original. But they look better in brown. Maybe less color would be appropriate since they are part of a background. Less color suit the night scene better. The alternative to show that only dim moonlight is reaching the landscape would be to make the whole ground darker. But the relatively light (back)ground adds to the drama, so I would keep that.
The middle one of the three islands in the gorge is floating. At least it looks like it because it has no contrast to the big part of the gorge. Both are lighter in the source image. I think it would be enough to make the middle island darker.
The blue tree near Nightmare has two colors in the source image. Since the green tree has two colors as well, I think it would be adequate to add the darker blue in its lower part. But now I'm just looking for unimportant details.
