Woah. how did you get so close? You were only using 18-55mm lens.

You might be surprised to know that I was feeding her dandelions and scratching her behind the ears today....
This deer is in a sanctuary for animals that cannot be released back into the wild due to injuries, illness or exposure to humans (most often due to being orphaned and cared for by people). These deer are quite used to humans and usually quite friendly as a result.

Oh wow. Where is that at? That is quite awesome...and in a way kind of sad. But i am sure they get a lot of attention right? But scratching her ears. That's awesome. I was expecting a telephoto lens, so I checked the EXIF data and saw where it was an 18-55mm lens. That's awesome. It's a lovely photo. She really looks at peace and happy.

I have to admit that I'm REALLY impressed that you checked the EXIF data! I was wondering how long it would take for someone to clue in that I was about 3 metres from her. You are obviously a person of exceptional intellect and notice.
I agree that it's a little bit sad but these animals are well cared for and, so far as I can judge these things, they are happy and content. The habitat that they are in is large and is in an area that contains a mixture of the kind of plants, trees and spaces that they would regularly encounter in the wild. It's just that because they can't run truly free that they see people so often and have become quite unafraid. Again with the over-exposure to humans on top of any other issues that preclude them being released into the wild.
Still, they live good lives and you're quite right - it did end in a pretty decent photo. I'm glad that you like it, too.

Well I realized that you were so close, and most pictures like this a telephoto lens is used and usually it's at 300mm. I was impressed that you had not used one but was wondering how you hadn't scared the deer away, since most deers run fast at the sight of noise or humans.
What other animals are at this place?
I am sure they are well taken care of. and she seems rather pleased.

Let's see.... There's a bobcat, two asian mute swans, Canada geese, a turkey vulture, a red-tailed hawk, a rough-legged hawk, two skunks, two red foxes (one of which is a black colour morph), two grey wolves (one is white), two raccoons (one is albino), two wild turkeys (both are ugly as sin), all kinds of mallard ducks, a black bear, two trumpeter swans and so many chipmunks that you are literally in danger of finding them in your pockets. Of course, depending on the season and the reason the list may shrink or grow and sometimes (happily despite the kids wanting to see more animals) some of the pens are vacant.

So they are in pens? Or just certain animals in pens? I was wondering when you listed all of those how these animals got along hahaha. I don't see people being able to pet grey wolves or a black bear? lol. But that sounds rather cool. Kind of like a save the wild life...zoo. haha. Does it cost to go? I'd assume so since they have to get money to keep it up?

It's in a provincial park so the only cost is the fee for parking. And, yes, they are in separate pens for the obvious reasons. You can get pretty close to most of them and it's a wonderful place to go with kids (I went alone today because it's a great place to walk quietly, too) as there are playgrounds and sports pitches as well as a pond and the best climbing tree for hundreds of miles in any direction.

Wow, free, besides parking. That's crazy. Sounds lovely.

Well....parking is $16 per vehicle regardless of the number of occupants so I guess that does help with the costs of maintaining the park and the sanctuary. I honestly don't mind as it's a wonderful place to spend a day.

Thanks so much! Wasn't amazing enough to get it added to either the Canon Photo or Canon User groups here on dA though. I'm quite pleased with the image though. Not sure how I could have gotten a much better one that day all things considered.

Huh, I think it's beautiful. How did she let you get so close to her? o.o
You use Canon, eh? Is it a digital or a film?
