Software Introduction Week

What is DAZ3D?

Daz Productions, Inc., commonly known as Daz 3D, is a 3D content and software company specializing in providing rigged 3D human models, associated accessory content, and software to the hobbyist as well as the prosumer market. Originally a part of Zygote Media Group , a general-purpose, application-agnostic 3D content broker, Daz 3D split off as "Digital Art Zone"[1]  in 2000[2]  to focus on supplying content for the Poser  market.

(taken from Wikipedia)

Basically, it's a 3D software in which you create 3D characters - they can be static or you can rig them and have them animated.

In this particular tutorial, I'm gonna talk about how to create a 3D static model.

One cool thing:

DAZ3D is a free software!

All you have to do is go over to their website, DAZ3D  ,create an account, confirm your email address, and then you can download and install the software.

I use Windows, so I'm not sure if things go differently on Mac, and my graphic card is Nvidia, so I'm able to use Iray.

Also, my graphic card is a pretty decent one. I'll have to tell you I upgraded it several times to be able to speed up my renders. I'm not saying a lower quality graphic card will not do its job but expect renders that might take up to 10 hours.

What's Iray? You'll see later.

So, let's get started!

Once you download the software, and you open it up, this what you'll see.

It's the DAZ Install Manager.

Enter the e-mail address you created to download the software.

It's gonna install the Genesis 2, Genesis 3 and Genesis 8 male and female bases, also, the DAZ3D program itself, and other things that the software needs, so it can run properly.

Make sure, after the "Install Box" is done, you go to "Ready to Install" and you install everything from there as well, and then you go to "Ready to download" and you download everything from there too.

The installation may take a while, so please be patient.

What is Genesis 2 / 3 and 8 male/female?

Genesis 2 / 3 and 8 male and female, are basically the bases for many characters you'll purchase.

But we will get to this later.

Here is where you start!

Once the installation is done, and everything is ready and good to go, and you open up DAZ, this is what you'll be greeted with:

Such empty, much gray...

Where are the models? Backgrounds? Wait and see. For now, it looks empty. So, let's see a bit what's happening around here.

The first thing you'll see on the left is the "Install" Window.

When you purchase content from DAZ3D, you can opt for the products to go straight there.

The second thing, underneath the "Install", is "Smart Content" - which I think is where the installed content from the previous menu goes. I never use/used it, as I install everything manually. Now, right underneath is the "Content Library" is what I use 98% of the time, as this is where all my content goes.

The original DAZ3D doesn't come with too much content, as even if the software is free - the characters and everything else needs to be purchased.

As I previously mentioned - in the Figures menu you see each Genesis starter pack.

Once you start purchasing content, a new category will be created, and it will be called "People", but still - some of the characters will still go into the "Figure" category, so if you don't find it in "People", check "Figure". But I'll show you that later.

In the "Architecture" category is where some of your environments will go. But you'll also have the  "Environments" category and "Scenes" categories created once you start purchasing content - so this is going to be divided depending on how the creators are naming them.

Purchasing Content

Now, DAZ3D works with purchased content. The content it comes with, it's pretty rudimentary and there are not many things you can do with them. Personally, I purchase content from two websites: DAZ3D  and Renderosity  , but sometimes I find gems on other websites too. Google is your friend.

For both of them, I have the paid membership, as you get certain deals, but if you're just starting out and it's a hobby, don't start investing in this.

Also, the content I have, I have gathered through the years, so here is my advice for you: think very well of what you want/need. And invest in that.

Now, a very, very, very important thing:

DAZ3D has several bases.

Besides the basic Genesis 2/3/8 bases, there are bases such as Victoria 6  - and certain characters are specifically made only for Victoria 6. This means if you don't have the Victoria 6 base, and you're buying a character that is made for Victoria 6, you're wasting your money.

Another example would be Michael 8  - this is a base, and there are specific characters that only work if you have this base.

Basically, this will require that you purchase first the base, and then the additional character for the base.

What you need to do, is to look for a character that says "for Genesis 2/3/8" because those do not require other bases.

Examples:

ALWAYS MAKE SURE THAT IN THE TITLE IT SAYS "FOR GENESIS" - WHETHER IT'S A MALE OR FEMALE

I want to also note that some may not have the "tag" on the photo preview, but it says it in the description.

Now, if you're ready to buy a base because you want to be able to buy certain characters, always choose wisely.

Look at all the characters as there are so many. And also look at what works with what. What would you like to create, etc.

I purchased something. Now what?

As I previously mentioned - I prefer to install everything manually. Why? Maybe because I'm a control freak. I like to have everything done by my two beautiful and careful hands.

Now, the content you'll purchase, it's gonna come as a zip file.

Right-click - extract to its folder.

Now, you will notice that inside this folder, there are multiple sub-folders that are also .zip folders.

This is because many of the content have several things that need installing, depending on what you're installing (such as people, data, templates, etc).

Again pick both, and extract each to their folder.

Now, open a New File Explorer, and browse to Documents.

There will be a folder called "DAZ 3D".

Double click on it. It will open to a folder called "Studio". Double click on it, and it will open another folder with 3 options. You will work with "My Library".

Now, from each folder you just extracted your purchased files, you just copy-paste the content to "My Library" as they come.

You don't change anything. Do not change the names, do not change anything. Just copy and paste.

They will come named "Data" "People" "Runtime" etc. Just copy/paste into "My Library" and do it from both folders.

Some products can come with more than one folder - do the same, copy - paste  from each folder into "My Library".

IMPORTANT: Some Folders will have "Content" as the first folder when you extract your files. Double click on it, and you'll find the materials you need to copy/paste into the "Library".

Now, normally if your DAZ software is closed, once you open it, your content should be there. If it's open, you'll need to go through a small process so your new content will appear in the library. The same process will apply if you open up DAZ and your content is not there:

Click on "Content Library". Where you see "Daz Studio Formats", click the little arrow, and you'll see "My Library".

Now, right-click on it, and hit "Refresh".

Now, once that is done, your content should appear in your library, so let's check that. We installed a dress, so let's find it.

As you can see, the dress is in the "People" folder, "Genesis 8" subfolder, as it is for the "Genesis 8 female". It's under the "Clothing" sub-category"; then you have the name of the creator, and the dress.

Underneath, you see a subfolder that starts with "Mat...", that's "Materials", but we will get to that later.

You'll also see "Templates". That's a folder where the templates for several things will go. It's not something we will use.

It's the folder where DAZ stores the templates for several things you'll purchase.

Now, before we move on, let's talk about Iray and dForce.

Iray

In fancy terms, IRAY® is a highly interactive and intuitive physically based rendering technology that generates photorealistic imagery by simulating the physical behavior of light and materials.

(taken from Nvidia )

In a less fancy explanation, it's a rendering system created by Nvidia that can use the GPUs in their graphics cards for best performance. You can use it without an Nvidia card using your computer's CPU to do the calculations but this is not as fast. It is what is called an "unbiased" or "physics-based" rendering system, which means it uses a more accurate model of how light behaves than the 3Delight renderer. It works out how light reflected from each surface illuminates other objects around it so you don't need special ambient lights and there is less need for extra fill-in lights. Mostly if you set up lights as you would in the real world you get the same sort of results.

(taken from DAZ3D Forum )

You'll see that most things come with two types of materials: "3Delight" and "Iray".

So if you have an Nvidia card, I recommend you use the "Iray" materials. Otherwise, use 3Delight materials.

But I'll show you that later.

dForce

dForce is a physics simulation engine that is included with Daz Studio 4.10.0.x. Over time, the dForce engine will continue to evolve and become capable of even more, but the first thing we are introducing with this new engine is the simulation of cloth.

(taken from DAZ3D )

This means, that once you pose your model, you can simulate the clothing to flow realistically with the model like the cloth naturally would in real life.

Not all clothing comes with this feature. Usually, they will have this description in their name. So only those will work with the dForce simulation.

But some clothes will not have this in their description, so you can go ahead and try the simulation. If there's no dForce available, you'll be prompted with a dialog box saying "No Materials found for Simulation".

NOW LET'S GET TO WORK!

I'm gonna show you, step by step, how to work with:

  • A model: adding a model to the scene, adding clothes, hair, posing the model.
  • A scene: integrating the model into the scene
  • Using shader presets to alter certain parts of the model (such as clothing)
  • Using lighting presets - to change the lighting in your scene.
  • And last but not least - rendering.

First, we're gonna load a character into our workspace. I do this by double clicking on the character. (I blurred out the private parts, so this tutorial is SFW.) The characters can be found under each Genesis it belongs to. Mine belongs to "Genesis 8".

Now, you'll have to click the little arrow next to "Characters" and find the name of your character. If you can't find it, it might be inside of the folder of the creator, as if sometimes a creator makes several characters, once you install them, they go into the creator's folder.

Once you find the character's name, click on it. You'll find "Head Apply", "Body Apply", "Nails Apply", "Navel Apply", and "Nipples Apply". I don't recommend nipples apply as most of the times they will just show through the clothes. Double click on each.

Now, click the little arrow next to the character. This will bring up several options for brows, eyes, make-up. For other characters, you'll have more options, such as tattoos, nails, etc. You'll find them all here. Again, double click on what you prefer from the list.

Now, clothing.

I specifically chose an outfit with dForce so I can show you exactly how it works.

I usually load the entire outfit, but the beauty of having multiple outfits is that you can mix and match. Again, double click.

** Always make sure you work on your model layer. The model is always the first in your layer list on the right of your screen, and is usually the name of your character, or "Genesis 8 / 3 / 2. Whenever you add something to the model, make sure your model is selected. **

Once the outfit is done, I go and choose the hair. Again, double click. The same as the clothing, hair have options you can find if you click the little arrows next to them.

All hair comes with colors options, and some hair come with different poses, that have movement, so you can blend it better into your work. This is what you'll find if you'll click the little arrow. You'll see that some hairs have "3DLight color options" or "Iray" or both. If you don't have an Nvidia graphics card, go with the 3Dlight color.

Now, if you have an Nvidia graphics card, there's also another advantage. From the drop-down menu, you can choose "Nvidia" - and you'll see a preview of your work so far.

Aaaaaand....

There you go!

Now, back to the "Texture Shaded".

I chose a pose so I can be able to show you how dFroce works. As you can see, the dress looks pretty terrible. The hand goes through it, and the flow of it, it's just waaaay too off.

.

So let's use dForce.

Choose the "Simulation Settings" tab. At the engine, make sure "dForce" is checked. And from the drop-down menu, NVIDIA CUDA is selected. Once you're all set, click the blue "simulate" button.

Now, don't panic. This will bring back your model to the classic "T" pose, and will slowly move her to the selected pose. And you'll see how the outfit will change and will start to flow naturally with the chosen pose, as the model will start going back to the pose that you chose.

Here is the dress after the dForce simulation:

As you can see, the dress looks and flows naturally around her body.

So here's the magic of dForce!

And now it's time for the environment.

I looked for an environment that fits her look. Once I found the environment, right-click, and hit "Merge into the scene".

This is how it looks with "Texture Shaded".

But once we preview it in Iray, it looks very very dark.

I moved it around to show you how the light in the scene looks like. It's ambient light, but too dark for what we want.

And this is where 'Light Presets" come into play.

There's no secret with the light presets. There are so many available, and you always have to find the one that works for you. I always try multiple ones until I find the one I'm pleased with.

After trying out multiple lighting presets, I settled with this one.

Now, let's move on to "Shader Presets".

Shader presets, basically change the texture of whatever you want to change.

I zoomed in so you can see better what this "shader presets" thing does. From the drop-down menu, choose the little thing that's circled.

This will let you choose parts that you can change the texture of. So, let's see.

As you can see, you're able to change the texture of the dress, and this applies to anything. From clothing, to environment.

Once you're pleased with everything, it's time to move on.

Render Settings.

From the "General" tab, make sure you have it set to "Custom". You can choose the size right underneath from this tab. Render Type needs to be "Still image" (Current Frame).

From the "Advanced" Tab, make sure you have the "Nvidia Iray" selected. If you have a different graphic card, select 3Delight.

From the "Alpha" tab, choose "specular transmission objects", and from the Render Mode, choose "Photoreal".

Again, from the "Advanced" tab, make sure your CPU is not clicked.

Otherwise, the CPU will supply the work that your graphic card doesn't do, it will slow down your computer, you won't be able to do anything, and basically - it doesn't help with anything.

Now, here comes the part that again doesn't have a secret and you'll have to discover what works best for you and your graphic card.

Now, what I personally do, is drag the Max Timer to the end. Why?

Because this is basically the time that DAZ spends on your render. So, if your render would take 5 hours, but DAZ has set 2 hours for it, after 2 hours it stops.

So my Max Time is always set to the Max.

The Max Samples, again, you need to play around and see what works better, and the same with the Rendering Quality. Keep in mind, that the higher the number, the longer the time, and also, your graphic card needs to be decent to be able to take a high render. Otherwise, you'll end up waiting 10 hours for a render, or even more. The rest, I personally never change, but you can try. As I said.

All Graphic cards are different, so settings will always be different.

Now, once you you're done with your render settings, it's time to render.

Rendering

Hit the blue render button.

This will open a new window, which will be the window in which your render will be. If you click back to DAZ, you'll see a little dialog box in which you can see your progress. Once you're done, in the window of your render, give it name, and save it.

Don't forget to to save your scene. This can be done before or after the render. For this, go to File - Save As - Scene. You can always revisit the scene if you want to change something.

And you're done!

Thank you so much for this. This is the best tutorial ever. I tried to work with DAZ several times but it was so confusing and I gave up eventually.
I'm very grateful to you for doing this cause I really want to learn this

I now DAZ can be confusing at the beginning, and it's the kind of software that makes you give up because it tends to make you believe it's hard to you use.

It might be, but once you get a grip of it, and you practice it becomes easy.

And I'm glad to hear you're ready to give it another try!

I had DAZ3D, but after following their own tutorials, I still had troubles with it.. Now I want to give it another try.

Thak you so much!

I was confused with DAZ at the beginning too.

But it's the kind of software that gets easier once you get a grip of it.

The only thing that sucks it's the rendering.

My god, sometimes it takes forever lol

I wouldn't call it shit, and technically it's not a picture - it's a render.

I know the process looks very complicated, but once you gather resources, the process becomes pretty easy.

The part that might look complicated - it's at the beginning - when you have to go through all the installing process - but after that - I can assure you - it's not really that hard.

Thank you, dear, very much!

I realize now it might look complicated, but after you get a grip with the resources and everything - it becomes easy.

Just like everything else. Practice makes perfect!
