One of the things I was most disappointed in with the Disney version of Doug was how they handled the appearance of Roger’s dad, especially since it’s implied that him and Edwina are divorced.I would have imagined things going down to be more similar to the events of the Fresh Prince episode, Papa’s Got A Brand New Excuse.
As for why Mr. Dink is there, it’s more of a reference to Doug and Patti PI where he was Roger’s dad for the day. I kind of like to imagine during the times they are together, Mr. Dink would be a father figure to him.
That, or I could have made a placeholder and had that be his new stepdad , but I liked this one better.

Wow. I remember the "Doug and Patti P.I." episode and how I felt about Roger's reasoning for stealing all the bumpers; poor guy.
And I don't blame you for being disappointed with how Disney handled Roger's dad.

They did.
But keep in mind, it was the Disney version; pretty much the franchise killer for "Doug", according to the fans.

There were some decent episodes (Doug’s Chubby Buddy, Patti’s Dad Dilemma, the Quailman episodes for example), but for the most part it’s one of the worst continuations / remakes in general.
I’m surprised people don’t bring it up more when talking about sequels and remakes.

True. But I'm willing to accept that it exists (though I'm curious to see what it's like if Patti's dad falls in love with Roger's mom instead of Ms. Kristal). Without Disney's Doug, we wouldn't have the better shows Disney airs today.

I only have vague memories of it, though it was my first introduction to Doug. Afterwards, the first episode of the Nick version was either a Bluffscout Episode or something else, but it did have a scene with Roger having a sprained ankle.

But I do know some Bluffscout-related episodes. Doug takes a hike (season 1), Doug on the trail (season 2), Doug flies a kite (season 3) and Doug door-to-door (season 4). And don't think any of them involved Roger getting a sprained ankle.
