So I got a couple requests on how I do my comics, color, placement, etc. So I thought I could show you a four part step on my most recent comic.

1.) Just sketch it all out! Don't try to be all exact with your lines (whether you are drawing on the computer or a drawing book). Waaay to many artists try to get their lines perfect at this stage...save the nit-pickery for stage two, this is just getting your ideas down to see if it works or not. I use Corel for this stage and use the "Pencil" tool set to a blue color (like a drafting pencil).

2.) This next part you can either do in Photoshop or Corel Painter. For me it depends on different factors such as the resolution I'm working at, what kind of lines I want, etc. If I want lines that will be wider or thinner depending on how hard I press on my tablet, I go with Photoshop and typically set my hard brush to a 5. If I want exact lines then I go with Corel Painter and use the "Pen" tool set to 3. And if you want you can go back and forth between the two programs seeing that Corel Painter rocks and will work off of a Photoshop file!

BTW: At this point you should have three layers; one that has your rough sketch, another that has your penned lines, and the 3rd should be for your color.

3.) After all the base color is in this is where I get my Oil painting on! (ok...that sounded cooler in my head) I choose a dark and a light color based off of the base color I'm going to be painting on. I typically start in with the dark and then add the light. Personally this tool is amazing and the blending is perfect. This is the most time consuming stage, so be patient!

4.) Nearly finished! Next you might want to take it into Photoshop (I just find using the box select tool for the borders, the filters, the layer effects, are all just really helpful for this final stage) to do all the finishing touches. This is where (if I haven't already ) add the dialog, the borders, and the background. Photoshop has some very easy and helpful tools to make this go quickly!

Ok, well there it is...this is how I pretty much make my comics! I have left the DOWNLOAD option open if you need to see it in a bigger format. If you have any specfic questions feel free to ask my friends...Have a fun time creating!

I physically inked it on step two...does that mean I can't color it?

Would it work to do the whole thing in GIMP? -is too cheap to get Coral Painter or Photoshop-

hehe...I know what you mean. I "found" mine on the internets so I could play with them without having to spend a ridiculous amount of money (that is until I need to officially buy them when I want to start making money :wink So I'm sure using BitTorrent you would be able to find and download a copy. If not...to be honest...I have never used nor heard of "GIMP." But I'm pretty sure if you just use the steps I outlined you could really use any program to achieve the results you want

Cooliness. ^^ I shall try with GIMP. See how it goes. I might even put it up here if it doesn't look too horrible. XD

hehe..either way...you should still put it up. That way people can give you constructive criticism! Isn't that what this site is for? Finding out what you are doing right and what you can improve upon? I wish you luck my friend!

ok the steps i got(thanks for the refreshing tip on the sketching step). i just have some things to add/correct ..so don't hit me just yet, hear me out! ok
you could to all the steps in Photoshop (this depends on you) on stage number 2 photoshop hase a good pen tool going on..id eaven venture to say it's slightly better build than painter's.
At stage 3..well for one you could do it in photoshop 2 but again it's what you prefer and here comes the real reason i wanted to comment...well photoshop can actualy memorise all 1000 brushstrokes you did but you have to change some setings for that..and if the setings are made you can undo it all from ctrl+alt+z ...now after all that i wrote it's not a critique its more of an opinion so ..im mainly just leting you know that you can change the number of history states in PS..that's all bro
PS: like to see the sketches of artwork!

That's perfectly fine my friend! I mean...what are tutorials if nothing but opinions? There are millions upon billions of ways to do practically the same thing in life. This is just the easiest way I have found...especially for painters who want to use a program that is better when it comes to simulating real paint. So, no worries!

you make it look easy .. that's a good idea making your signature into a brush

IMAGINeye In reply to SlavePrincess [2008-11-06 15:32:29 +0000 UTC]

Awwww Thank you my friend! Trust me though...it's not easy...can't tell you how many times I scrap my artwork and start over due to me being anal retentive! But the brush thing is a good way to keep certain things that you need to stay the same i.e. your signature, a logo

I love this! btw... i so owe you for that bodies tutorial you did a while back. Since I've been using that system my characters are a lot less stiff... I've done more action pictures, not so posey, and I think I'm just improving a lot faster now that I've started doing that!

Wow...Well thank you for that amazing compliment! I'm always glad that some of my bits O' knowledge can help others become better artists! I would love to see some of those sketches!

SoraNoMiki In reply to IMAGINeye [2008-10-31 21:12:35 +0000 UTC]

the sketches are actually quite bad but they give me a really good start for coloring them digitally. I know... I'll upload one and show you what I'm talking about... I haven't filled in the details yet so it can still be a surprise what it's going to be. I'll go ahead and scan it and post it for now though. You can see what I mean. I'm feeling much more comfortable with anatomy since I started doing it... and I don't get the length of legs and arms way off anymore.

Awesome. Very insightful. :B

I like how you've made your signature a brush, I've never thought about doing that. :00

P.S: In photoshop, Ctrl+Alt+Z is the shortcut for "step back" which you can use to go back like 15/20 steps or something. Idno how far back you can go exactly.
