Description
At NEMO's clandestine training facility outside of Tokyo, students of the city's most elite private schools are recruited into the program's elite special forces brigade. In a network of deep poolsof varying depths, underwater tunnels, mazes, airlock hatches opened by solving intricate puzzles, false hatches leading noly to blank walls, and a dizzying network of laboratories and observation decks manned by top Japanese and US scientists, the cadets undergo strenous underwater training drills meant to push them to their utmost physical, psychological, and emotional limits. Injected with blood-altering morphines to acclimate their bodies to deep-sea water pressure so as no need to risk being tracked by using scuba gear, the cadets, submerged in a 50m deep pool, access the modules that contain their portable air regulators.

The modules require two cadets to pry open, as they are pressurized and opening them deep underwater proves a challenge, an intentional technical decision to promote extensive teamwork under extreme duress. After obtaining their regulators, they must navigate a 150m maze of underwater tunnels with many false hatches containing one actual airlock hatch. But the hatch must be reached before the time limit expires, or the hatch will be locked shut and the cadets will be unable to open it, left to drown for failing NEMO's extremely demanding standards.
