I used HDR Efex Pro (3 different exposures) to bring out the colours. Then used Lightroom to reduce the HDR artefacts and add vignetting + darken parts of the image to try keep the viewer's eyes inside the frame.

Yup, -2,0,2 EV bracket exposures which were merged into an HDR image using HDREfx2

A slightly outdated overview of the common HDR programs can be found here [link] . I recommend Photomatix (standalone) [link] and HDREfex (lightroom or PS plugin) [link] . The trial version of Photomatrix is perpetual but has big watermarks when saving files, however they do give good academic discounts. HDREfex only has a ~15 day trial. I've been using both as a trial for a while and only recently bought HDREfex as I really liked the colours I was getting out of it (found 15% discount coupon online to help reduce price).
