Awesome! Awesome!
I can honestly say that I could so easily see this published in a book, or magic card! The composition is fantastic, it fits awesome with the story telling from left to right. The piece tells just enough to get the idea of what is going on, but it allows enough for the viewer to interpret with their own story. The depth and the values are good as well.
Critiques,
I have to get picky to really pull a critique out of this, so props to you for that!
The char. in the foreground, with the sword, he really stands out from the rock in front. It looks like it is the paintery and the rock is photographic. Which is a difficult fix since the character needs to be rim lighted for this type of piece so I'm not sure on the changes needed. Even then, its minimal, and you did say that this was a matte painting so meh, like I said, I have to get picky... Every thing else blends really well so great job on that!
I'll have to say YOUR biggest strength is the mood of a piece. Embrace it and keep on chugging!

I mainly use Photoshop CS4.I do have Corel Painter 10, but it seems to act finicky with my computer. I would like to work out the kinks and use it more, I love how the brushes act with the canvas. And I would totally love some of those tutorials!
